Panaji, June 05, 2013:

“Hand-made in Goa, handicrafts items by Goan artisans: key to save Goa from plastics”-South Asia Foundation.

Governor of Goa, H.E. Shri B V Wanchoo flagged off the “Human chain” from Kala Academy Goa, Panaji and launched the South Asia Foundation’s campaign “Plastic-free Goa” on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 05, 2013 at Kala Academy Goa, in the presence of hundreds of artisans from all across North Goa who joined hands to form the human chain to pledge for a “Plastic-free Goa”. They are enrolled as registered artisans with the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts),  Ministry of Textiles, Government of India by the South Asia Foundation.

The participants had formed human chain from Kala Academy Goa stretching across D B Marg from Campal to Azad Maidan and distributed handmade recycled paper bags free of cost to the public.

 

Another highlight was children’s drawing competition with the theme “Towards a greener Goa” where children of various schools of Goa participated. The Governor also inspected the children involved in drawing competition and encouraged them for taking part in the initiative of the Foundation. Around 50 children participated in the drawing competition.

 

Result of the drawing competition: 

Junior category winners (5-8 years):  Gajesh Siddhivinayak Naik adjudged 1st prize. 2nd prize. Mihika D’souza

Middle school (9-12 years): Arnav D’souza  adjudged 1st prize, Jonathan A Vas 2nd prize and Ashish Rath 3rd prize.

Senior category (13-16 years):  Aiswarya Rath adjudged 1st prize, Mayuri Gaurav 2nd prize and Aasfa Shaikh 3rd prize.

A special citation was given to Rishikesh  C V for acknowledging his painting skills by a panel of judges comprising of Ms. Biju Naik AD, DITC, Mr. Francisco Martins, Artiste, Prof. Ranjini Swamy and Dr. Divya Singhal of GIM.

 

Brand “Hand-made in Goa”, handicrafts products of Goan artisans were also displayed. The Hon’ble Governor appreciated the efforts of the Foundation and artisans and requested the Foundation to emphasize on creating a strong marketing network which is key to success to artisans’ way of life.

 

Shri Rahul Barua, Secretary General of South Asia Foundation reiterated that brand “Hand-made in Goa” is the answer to create a sustainable socio-cultural enterprise through craft sector in Goa. Shri Vishnu S Wagh, Chairman Kala Academy Goa, Shri Siddhivinayak S Naik, Member Secretary Kala Academy Goa, Shri S K Punaji, Programme Officer, Bal Bhavan, Ms. Akankcha Shri, Project Director, South Asia Foundation were also present on the occasion.

South Asia Foundation (SAF), set up in 1991,  has been working in Goa for more than 5 years, at various villages, reaching at the doorsteps of the communities in the remote locations of North Goa. SAF initiatives in Goa aim at Branding, Marketing of the craft and effective Micro-financing to the artisans. SAF is currently providing benefits to more than 2500 artisans and has various projects in North Goa including the annual South Asian Film Festival (saff).
