UK’s Chevening Scholarship and Fellowship programmes for 2018-19 now open

Opportunity for future leaders to benefit from the UK’s most prestigious scholarship offer and join the 2500-strong body of Indian alumni

The application window for UK’s prestigious and fully-funded Chevening scholarship and fellowship programmes is now open.

Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

The Chevening India programme is the largest in the world, offering up to 120 fully paid scholarships and fellowships this year. Some 2500 people make-up the body of Indian Chevening alumni.

Speaking ahead of the formal launch on 9 August, Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG, British High Commissioner to India said:

“Those selected for the Chevening programme will join a global network of influencers and leaders. Not only do scholars receive a first-rate British education that will enhance their careers, they also join the living bridge of people and ideas between the UK and India, strengthening our mutual understanding and friendship. I’m delighted that the India programme remains the largest offered by the British Government globally and look forward to building new and lasting relationships with the new batch of Chevening alumni.”

Chevening, founded in 1983, is the British Government’s international award scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of awards – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions around the world through a rigorous selection process.

One-year master’s scholarships are given to outstanding Indian graduates with a minimum of two years’ work experience to study any subject of their choice at any recognised UK university. HSBC sponsors three scholars from India annually to study in fields related to environment and sustainability.

Chevening Scholarships


Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding and emerging leaders to pursue a one-year master’s at any UK university. It offers financial support along with the opportunity to become part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network. Applicants from India can choose any course of study, but we particularly welcome applicants from the field of energy security, climate change, urban development, defence, security, foreign policy, trade and investment, economic reforms as well as research and innovation.

Chevening Fellowships

The Chevening Fellowships are customised, professional development programmes designed for mid-to-senior level professionals who want to expand their knowledge and expertise in their specific field of work. The programmes are tailored, short-term courses which usually run for 8-12 weeks at a designated UK university. Applications for the following fellowships are set to open from 7 August until 27 September:

The Chevening Cyber Security Fellowship

The Chevening Cyber Security Fellowship is aimed at mid-career Indian professionals with demonstrable leadership potential in the field of cyber security or cyber policy in India. This programme is running since 2014. Six fellows are sent every year to the UK for a ten week fully-funded residential programme delivered at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Cranfield University

We draw fellows from the Government of India, the Indian Police Service, academia, the legal profession, entrepreneurs and industry. The course enables a small yet significant group of Indian cyber experts to get professional training on the subject enabling them to study best practices and build mutual understanding between the two countries in mitigating cyber security threat and promoting defence cooperation.

The Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Fellowship (CRISP)

The Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Fellowship (CRISP) started in 2011 and has since run in partnership with Rolls Royce. The ten week programme is designed for high-calibre mid-career professionals and is delivered at St. Cross College, University of Oxford. Twelve Indians and two Sri Lankans are carefully chosen for the cohort every year. They work in the field of science, innovation, manufacturing, technology, business and related public administration with links to public policy and belong to a variety of sectors and are mostly corporate executives, entrepreneurs, research scientists, academics and public sector employees.

The Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship Programme

The Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship Programme started in 2011 and is designed for promising journalists from South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives. It provides an informed and evidence-based context to key policy debates and mutual understanding of international positions (including UK approaches), supply practical experience, and encourage dialogue on key issues.

The eight-week fully funded residential programme at the University of Westminster is customised for future media leaders and opinion formers working in the areas of political, economic and business journalism in India. The programme focuses on good governance in a changing world: media, politics and society.  While a strong grasp of English is necessary, we encourage applicants from vernacular and non-traditional media environments who can display their ability and vision.

The Chevening Standard Chartered Financial Services Fellowship

The Chevening Standard Chartered Financial Services Fellowship is customised to build expertise in specialist skills such as risk management, actuarial sciences, investment management and financial regulation, which will increase the talent pool in the Indian market and provide a fillip to growth in the sector.

Fellows will return to their professional positions of influence and continue engagement with the UK to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. The fellowship will offer a high quality professional development opportunity which provides specialist skills to encourage innovation and help improve industry capability in India. Fellows will also gain an appreciation of the value of cost-benefit analysis of financial regulation and leave with a positive impression of the UK.

The fellowship is designed for eight high ranking mid-career professionals working in the financial sector who can potentially contribute to policy making, including Ministry of Finance and associated entities, financial regulators such as RBI, SEBI, IRDA, PFRDA, influential academics, think tanks, entrepreneurs, particularly in areas such as financial technology and asset management.
