Jaipur, January 23, 2016: With the growing trend in technology and the need to provide specialized services on the go even at the grass root level, The Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) University, Jaipur, invited, Padma Vibhushan Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Ex Chairman ISRO and the current Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, to discuss the how space technology can help improve the healthcare landscape of the country.
Padma Vibhushan Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Ex Chairman, ISRO and Current Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University said, “Space has a huge potential to provide services to the field of medicine which can ultimately help improve the healthcare landscape. Over the years it has been noticed that the ratio of the patients to the doctors has increased tremendously, which is why there is a need to train paramedics and also provide timely specialists inputs to the needs of the patient. Secondly there is also a need to constantly upgrade the education of doctors for the upgradation of public health systems. Thirdly, timely information needs to be disseminated even to areas where the information is inaccessible. All this is now possible through Telemedicine systems where medical assistance can be provided through virtual imaging systems. Telemedicine is a tool which is used to equip the district hospitals to transmit valuable information and also helps to improve economies, saves time, provides instant infrastructure and saves the life well in time. Today 70 speciality hospitals out of the 360 hospitals in the country are equipped with Telemedicine. ”
Padma Vibhushan Dr. Kasturirangan also said, “It is also important for the cross fertilization of ideas which is the need of the hour for developing the healthcare landscape. Medical imaging systems which can be provided by the satellites can be utilized to preempt the water borne diseases such as malaria, typhoid, cholera etc. These can be detected through the level of moisture, vegetative growth, water stagnation etc. All these can be provided by satellites through images which may help the healthcare providers to enact well in time to prevent these water borne dieses. Thus, these can be utilized for sensitivity analysis as well.”
