TechGig Code Gladiators breaks convention attracting Senior Professionals to test their mettle at India’s Largest Coding Contest

July 28, 2016: TechGig Code Gladiators 2016 has seen a record number of senior profiles breaking the widely held belief that only youngsters take part in hackathons and coding contests. After a successful three-year run, and being officially recognized by the Limca Book of Records as the ‘biggest code contest in India’, the number of registrations almost doubled this year as compared to the last year’s edition.  Code Gladiators 2016 had over 1,50,000 coders participating from 15,000+ companies across India.

“In a short span of three events, TechGig Code Gladiators has differentiated itself, not just by breaking National records, but by attracting the best in the industry, including senior professionals with over 10 years of hardcore coding experience. It is very gratifying that senior professionals are making a comeback to coding and competing at the national level. They recognize in today’s day and age even individual contributors can reach the highest levels of success. Such enthusiasm across generations of coders has never been witnessed in India before,” says Nilanjan Roy, Head of Strategy, Times Business Solutions.

The TechGig Code Gladiators 2016 edition has added many firsts to its kitty. From recognizing its youngest coding champion – runner’s up Sumeet Varma, a B.Tech Final Year student to introducing parallel theme track challenges on e-commerce, e-location and payments – this year’s Code Gladiators established new records on many scales.

Another fact that made TechGig Code Gladiators 2016 edition different from the first two is the considerable rise of participation from senior techies with experience ranging 15-20 years. Traditionally, coding contests and hackathons were considered forte of freshers and entry level techies.

The trend seems to be changing slowly as out of total registrations received for Code Gladiators 2016 edition approximately 7.5% registrants were in the experience range of 15-20 years. Registrations under experience category had increased 5 times since the first edition of Code Gladiators held in 2014.

I’m experienced, I’m coding

For Amit Gandhi, a delivery manager at Parkar Global Technologies Pvt Ltd, participating in Code Gladiators 2016 was more about retaining touch with coding which was fading owing to day-to-day management work.

This was his second stint with Code Gladiators. In the 2015 edition, he was among the top five coders in the company round. But he did not make it to the finale then. Gandhi comes with an experience of 15 years and feels that to stay updated and have a technical edge, one should participate in contests such as Code Gladiators.

For software architect with 19 years experience, Baswaraj Kasture of Persistent Systems, Code Gladiators 2016 was the first of its kind contest which he had participated in. He shared that though he works as a software architect but having hands down experience on coding was a great learning at the competition.

An energized Kasture also mentioned that this competition became a ground for him to exchange ideas with peers, young coders from the industry and learn different approaches related to coding without worrying about experience and designation.

Code Gladiators 2016 happened by chance for Kamala Kumar Shanmuga Sundaram, a tech architect with 18 years of experience with Tech Mahindra. His motive behind participation was to experiment with his learning.  Indeed, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learning. His biggest takeaway was that he could identify areas of improvement by participating in Code Gladiators 2016.

Senior techies feel juniors are pro

When asked, how tough or easy was it for senior techies to navigate through a tough code contest?
Pat came the reply from Gandhi, who believes that it is easier for junior level techies to make a mark in such contests as their ability to code is in-built. Young coders write algorithms on daily basis and they also take part in such contests all year round.

With a hush look on his face, Gandhi cited that 10-15 years ago such forums were missing from the tech scene and today they give a big boost to coders and inspire them to be programming pros. Agreeing to this, Kasture added that platforms such as Code Gladiators’ enthuse and inspire coders and even senior people like us to come out of our routine jobs and learn while coding.
