Peerless – Marching Ahead

Peerless – the name evokes trust. On the foundation of that trust amongst our employees, customers and all other stakeholders, we have traversed almost 90 years. Not many organizations last that long. Building on the foundation of that legacy, we resolve to march ahead – towards stronger and more resilient growth, along with our continuing spirit of making a difference to society.

The roots of Peerless were sown in the small savings business. However, like most organizations, we have evolved over time. Today, Peerless is a significantly diversified group with operations across Hospital, Hotels, Financial Services, Real Estate, and Skilling. The core businesses like Hospital, Hotels and Real Estate are all profitable. Even the fledgling financial services business is profitable. However, it is not just about revenue and profits. In fact, the Peerless Hospital today serves close to 3 lakh patients a year. Our housing company, Bengal Peerless (a JV with WBHB) has created housing units for more than 5,000 happy families till date. We serve thousands of customers at our various hotels at Kolkata, Port Blair, Hyderabad, Durgapur and Mukutmanipur.

Over the years, we have looked at each challenge as an opportunity, the biggest one being Covid. In the fight against Covid, we have conducted more than 1,30,000 RTPCR tests, treated 1,29,859 Covid 19 patients and have administered 78,120 doses of COVID vaccine. Interestingly, while many businesses across the globe resorted to layoffs during Covid, Peerless did not let go of any of its employees during those painful months. We strongly believe that humanity comes ahead of profits and that is a core pillar of our sustainability.

Peerless has always been at the forefront of social contribution across many areas. One of them is the Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP). This Prakalpa focusses on the mental, physical and intellectual development of under-privileged children from slum areas.  This Prakalpa was launched in the year 2010 by the Ramakrishna Mission, and Peerless has been an integral partner all through.

We are at an important juncture in the Peerless journey. We have been blessed to have had the guidance and leadership of Mr. SM Datta, ex-Chairman of Unilever India, as the Chairman of the Board of PGFI. As part of natural transition, Mr. Datta is passing the leadership baton to Mr. Partha Sarathi Bhattacharya, ex-Chairman of Coal India, as the new Chairman of the Board of PGFI. In addition, as you know, Mr. Jayanta Roy has taken over as MD of the company, after the sad demise of our beloved Mr. SK Roy, who has led the organization with zeal, compassion and dedication for many years.

Going forward, Peerless is poised for further growth and sustainable social impact. On that journey, we will build a solid talent pool across functions. We will also review our businesses in an objective manner and focus on areas that will help us achieve accelerated growth. Where required, we will take tough calls. Specifically, we will focus on embracing digital across everything we do, and strengthening a culture of customer orientation. We understand that customer expectations will be different in the coming years, and we will strive to meet those expectations across everything we do.

We thank you for your time and look forward to your continued support in the days to come.
