Pens are often used to create art, but Montegrappa has prepared a new limited edition that is itself a work of art. The limited edition of 50 exclusive rollerball pens, featuring an original drawing signed by Ted Scapa, will bring a smile to the user, every time the pen reveals its charming illustrations.
Renowned Dutch artist Scapa is concept designer, cartoonist, graphic designer, writer and editor who has lived and worked in Switzerland since 1962. After studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and spending two years as a guards officer, Scapa worked abroad for several years in India, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the United States. He has been a cartoonist for various international newspapers and magazines such as Punch in England and the Nebelspalter in Switzerland and has published numerous children’s books and collections of cartoons. For nearly three decades, Scapa has worked as a freelance draftsman and designer, one who draws, paints, designs carpets, creates sculptures, objects and light bodies. He is also known to a wider audience as the creator of numerous posters, Swatch watches and Pro Juventute stamps. Also a restaurateur, he opened his restaurant Scapa in Lenk in 2009. His works have been awarded various international prizes.
Scapa’s collection of pens designed for Montegrappa is called ELEPHANT, and as the word itself imparts, the applied images represent to the fullest one of his most recognisable drawing styles: bright and colourful, tongue-in-cheek illustrations for children…and adults!
The pen itself is made in delicately-pearlised white resin used for the cap and green for the barrel. The trim is polished stainless steel, further enriched by colourful red and white resin rings crowning the pen cap, barrel-end and mid-section. The pen cap bears the artist’s “capital letters” signature. The pen barrel is skilfully customised with hand-painting by our long-time collaborator and artist, Lorena Straffi.
Each pen is unique, the light green watercolour backdrop drawn anew with every pen produced at the Montegrappa ateliers, which is then personalised with the Elephant motif. The pen’s packaging is customised, too, and also guaranteed to raise a smile! Every Elephant pen will be delivered with the hand-signed book “Elefantasie” of Ted Scapa.
