Gurgaon; October 29, 2015: Renowned Neurologist, Dr. AN Jha (Chairman-Institute of Neurosciences) at Medanta – The Medicity and the Medanta Institute of Neurosciences today organised a Stroke Awareness Talk on the occasion of World Stroke Day 2015. As a part of the event, Dr. AN Jha addressed a gathering on the grave situation of brain stokes in India and advised on their prevention and leading a healthy life.
The general awareness around stroke are low in India therefore, theme for this years’ Stroke Day is “Spot a Stroke – FAST” which is familiarising people with the symptoms of stroke to help identify it and take action within the golden hour. FAST stands for facial drooping, arms weakening, slurred speech and timely calling of an ambulance.
Stroke, also known as Cerebro Vascular Accident (CVA), occurs when there is an interruption of the blood flow to the brain resulting in a sudden loss of neurological function. This can lead to a range of deficits including changes in the level of consciousness as well as impairments of motor, cognitive, sensory, perceptual and language function and almost 15 per cent strokes are hitting people in their 30s and 40s and this surely calls for immediate attention.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta said “Unlike a heart attack, brain stroke has alarmingly low levels of awareness in India. Today, the onus to create awareness around stroke lies with us, the medical fraternity, so that everyone understands it the way they understand a heart attack. Only then we will be able to win this battle against stroke.”
