Jaypee Hospital organized a ‘Catch them early’ workshop to spread awareness on Breast Cancer

Noida, 3rd February, 2017: To mark the occasion of the World Cancer Day, Jaypee Hospital, a Multi Super Specialty Hospital at Sector 128 Noida, organized a workshop today on breast cancer awareness. The theme of the workshop was ‘Catch them early’ which aimed to address the doubts and educate the women about the symptoms of breast cancer at an early stage itself. The workshop was organized by the Oncology Department of Jaypee Hospital which included Dr. Sudarshan De, Director, Radiation Oncology, Dr. Malay Nandy, Director, Medical Oncology and Dr. Pawan Gupta, Additional Director, Surgical Oncology Department, Jaypee Hospital.

The workshop was attended by more than hundred doctors and cancer winners across different states. It had two sessions. The first session involved the doctors who discussed about the symptoms and procedures of catching the disease at an early stage while the second session involved the cancer winners who shared their journey. A rehabilitation program was also organized for the winners.

Explaining about the alarming rise in the number of breast cancer patients, Dr. Sudarshan De, Director, Radiation Oncology Department, Jaypee Hospital said, “The risk of breast cancer in Indian women is increasing at a rapid pace. Earlier, breast cancer was mostly diagnosed in women aged 45 – 50 years, but nowadays due to our sedentary lifestyle and irregular food habits even women of age group of 25 – 35 years are found to be suffering from breast cancerIf this trend continues to prevail then India will rank 5th in breast cancer patients by 2020. As per the reports, the number of women suffering from breast cancer has increased to 23 from 10 in 1 lakh women.”

Making people aware of the symptoms of breast cancer, Dr. Malay Nandy, Director, Medical Oncology, Jaypee Hospital said, “Lump in the breast, bloody nipple discharge, inverted nipple, rashes, nipple pain, thickening of the nipple or breast skin and pain in the breast area are some of the symptoms of breast cancer. The most common being the lump in the breast. The disease can be hereditary as well. It is advisable for every woman to get the mammography test done by the age of 50 so that the disease can be diagnosed timely. If breast cancer is diagnosed on time then it can be cured completely.”     

 

On the occasion Dr. Pawan Gupta, Additional Director, Surgical Oncology Department, Jaypee Hospital said, “The need of the hour is to make people as well as the doctors aware of the importance of catching the disease at an early stage. 80% of women can detect breast cancer themselves if they are aware of the symptoms. It is imperative that whenever a woman observes any of the breast cancer symptoms then they should consult an oncologist for proper and early treatment.”
