How To Get The Most From Your Career And Your Life: Ignite CALM

ignitecalmPortland, ME, November 17, 2014 – After a few years outside the ordinary working environment, Dr. Deb Snyder found her reentry into the world of 9 to 5 profoundly difficult. Characteristically, she took a troubling situation and turned it into something positive: her job became a laboratory to study how people work and how they can quickly learn to work better. Ignite CALM: Achieving Bliss in Your Work (NorLightsPress) provides readers with deep wisdom in a fun, approachable style empowering anyone to improve their life using the CALM concepts.

Snyder gathered holistic techniques and lessons to help readers transform their lives for the better. Ignite CALM takes the steps of embracing conscious business qualities, teaching how to bring your best self to work each and every day and discover true happiness while on the job, no matter what the job.

The advice and practical guidance is for those who want to improve their lives and take positive action to attain success not just at work but in all aspects of daily living. Snyder says, “we can’t expect to live happy lives if we’re miserable at work. Within us, we each have the power to create working lives that are both pleasant for us and profitable for our employers. It’s up to us to make changes, and those changes begin in our own hearts and actions.”

CALM = Creativity, Authenticity, Luminosity, and Mindfulness. “Four questions connect people to their soul’s wisdom,” Snyder explains. “To ignite CALM, ask yourself these four essential questions and be absolutely honest in your answers.”

Creativity: Have I looked at this situation creatively?
Authenticity: Am I being true to my personal values and goals?
Luminosity: Am I bringing the best of me to this issue?
Mindfulness: How does this situation affect my life and others?

“This technique gets us into our best place, so we can see a situation clearly without distraction,” she continues. These four questions are the heart of the CALM approach – all you need to get the internal fire started. “This is your flash point, where you strike the match.”

Debra J. Snyder, author of Ignite CALM:

1. You tell readers they must “ignite CALM” to bring the best of themselves to work each day. Now this sounds like incompatible advice…what does “ignite calm” mean?

I mean this is the moment to LIGHT IT UP and stoke your inner fire by taking positive action—by accepting responsibility for your own life and how you live it. When we ignite CALM, we make an active choice to bring the best of ourselves to whatever we’re doing in that present moment. CALM is an acronym, which stands for the four essential components to happiness at work and in our daily lives.

CALM = Creativity, Authenticity, Luminosity, and Mindfulness

2. Your first book was on parenting…what prompted you to write a business book?

The idea for this book came to me when I spent twelve frustrating weeks in the trenches of corporate America being trained to manage claims for a Fortune 500 insurance company. Shelving my yoga pants for a suit, I put on shoes and walked back into an environment I had known in my younger years. From my new perspective as a personal-development expert, I discovered the soul crushing dysfunction of that environment and met many unhappy people. Although this diversion into the corporate world caused me great personal discomfort, it was also like paid research and gave me a tremendous opportunity to be of service to others—by reaching out to other workers, regardless of their professions, and helping them cope with difficult environments and make positive changes in their lives. It is possible to find greater happiness at work and at home.

3. How can businesses and workers improve their relationships? Where are we going wrong?

Even though people make the business world go round, the needs of the people are often the first to be neglected in business. If we take the responsibility of our work wellness into our own hands, then we are no longer at the mercy of a company that’s too busy to care. We will care about ourselves, make better choices, and create environments truly worthy of working in. The human factor has to come back into the equation. We must, all…businesses and workers, bring the best of ourselves to the relationship.

4. In your book you share the story of how you made $50,000 in ten minutes while wearing pajamas and a back cast. Do you believe anyone can do that?

Yes, I do. I hope by sharing my story it will help people be more open to the unbounded possibilities available to each of us. We must realize how all things are connected. Every decision we make, every action we take moves us closer to, or further away from, our soul’s purpose. And yes, that can also mean money. I believe by shifting our perspectives we can all unlock the doors to unlimited wealth and happiness.

5. Why do you think it’s essential we change how we work right now?

Simple…life is short and now is all we have. We need to make the most of every precious, messy moment and not wait until a crisis wakes us up. We create our life. Everything in life is connected. We can’t expect to live happy lives if we’re miserable at work. Not only do we spend about 50 hours per week at our jobs, we end up wasting energy complaining about work during our off hours.  This often leads to frustration and disappointment with our friends and family who’ve heard it all, again and again. We are squandering valuable time. Yet, within us, we each have the power to create working lives that are both pleasant for us and profitable for our employers. It’s up to us to make changes, and those changes begin in our own hearts and actions. We can all live the life of our dreams starting right now.
