Supports International Women’s Day awardee Dr. Rekha Mehra to reiterate its commitment to celebrating women champions

The event was directed and choreographed by Dr. Rekha Mehra and focused on the theme of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and included kathak performances by disciples of Guru Deepak Gangani and Guru Nishant & Vandana Gupta, as well as Bharat Natyam performances by disciples of Guru Ashmitha Baburaj and disciples of Smt. Sindhu Mishra from the Aayam Institute of Performing Arts.

As a token of its commitment to create awareness on menstrual hygiene, everteen® has pledged to contribute sanitary pad supplies for 50 underprivileged girl performers from Urvashi Dance Music Art & Cultural Society. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16, only about 57.6% of the Indian women use sanitary napkins and 62% women in the age group 15-24 years still rely on cloth during periods. A survey by Women Health Organization showed that at least 43% of women have experienced a situation where they did not have ready access to sanitary essentials at the beginning of their periods.

International Women’s Day awardee Dr. Rekha Mehra is credited for deeply enriching the repertoire of Kathak dance form for over three decades. She has also pioneered dance-based storytelling through thematic fusion ballets focusing on grave social issues such as HIV/ AIDS, global warming, impact of war, terrorism, Mumbai serial blasts, road safety, women empowerment, girl education, female feticide, the five elements, wellness, needs of specially-abled children with physical and mental handicaps, issues of home-based workers, and more. Dr. Rekha Mehra has personally trained more than 4000 students, including more than 600 under-privileged girls. She has also single-handedly mobilized support for impoverished girls through sewing machines, blankets, educational, stationery and art & craft materials, and ghungrus. Her performances at Rashtrapati Bhawan, Prime Minister’s House, Common Wealth Games, UNIFEM (now UN Women), UNESCO, ITPO, SPIC MACAY, Indian Council for UN Relations and others have sensitized top leaders on the need to preserve Kathak as India’s cultural heritage. She has promoted Indian classical dance among large global audiences in Abu Dhabi, Bali, Bangkok, Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Doha, Jakarta, Jamaica, Kathmandu, London, Madrid, Mauritius, Moscow, Nairobi, Phuket, Sharjah, Singapore, Tashkent and several other international cities.
