FORTISFirst ever reported case of Bariatric surgery on a survivor of Rectal Malignancy

New Delhi, 08th July, 2015: A team of doctors at Fortis Flt Lt Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj performed the first ever reported bariatric surgery on a 54 year old rectal cancer survivor, from Sudan helping him to lead a better quality of life. The surgery was led by Dr Randeep Wadhawan, Director and Head, Department of Minimal Access, Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Fortis Flt Lt Rajan Dhall Hospital along with a team of doctors.

The patient, Makuc Gordon Ayom Thon, was suffering from Rectal Malignancy when he first came to India in 2012. Weighing 102 Kgs, he underwent a Da Vinci Robotic APR (AbdominoPerineal Resection) with end colostomy on 10th May, 2012. The operation was performed by Dr. Randeep Wadhawan and his team. He then received chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Fortis Hospital, Noida for the next eight months during which period he also lost nearly 12 Kgs. Following detailed investigations including PET CT, his Tumour Markers were found to be normal suggesting that he had been completely cured of his cancer.

In the intervening years, the already obese patient put on more weight due to his lifestyle. Now weighing 110 kgs, he sought counsel from Dr Wadhawanand and was advised Bariatric Surgery in order to control his obesity and improve his quality of life. A Sleeve Gastrectomy has since been conducted laparoscopically and the patient has recovered fully and is ready to fly back home.

Dr Randeep Wadhawan, Director and Head, Department of Minimal Access, Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery said, “Obesity is a major lifestyle problem today. The patient, having survived a rectal malignancy earlier, weighed more than what was healthy for a normal person. Since the patient had a family history of cancer, we counselled him to undergo a bariatric surgery to minimize the risk of a cancer relapse, obesity being a significant risk factor. We are happy that he has responded well to the treatment and will be able to have a significantly better quality of life.”

Speaking on the successful operation, Abrarali Dalal, Facility Director, Flt Lt Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj, said, “This is another first by our team of doctors in our journey towards clinical excellence. This unique treatment will not only minimize a relapse of cancer but will also improve the patients overall health. We wish him all the best, as he starts a new chapter in his life.”

There is a known relationship between obesity and colorectal cancer. It has been observed that obese men are prone to colorectal cancer with one in every three cancer deaths in USA linked to obesity.
