When it comes to climate protection, ThyssenKrupp is one of the leading companies in Germany’s DAX stock index. This has been confirmed by the international non-profit organization CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project). “With a score of 99 A minus in the 2015 climate change report, ThyssenKrupp AG has earned the status of ‘Index Leader DAX’. That makes ThyssenKrupp AG one of the ten best companies this year,” says Susan Dreyer, head of CDP in Germany.

CDP holds the world’s biggest collection of corporate climate data. The organization publishes its annual climate change report on behalf of 822 investors representing assets of 86 trillion euros. Almost 2,000 listed companies disclosed data to be independently assessed against CDP’s scoring methodology.

Thanks to its climate protection activities ThyssenKrupp scored not only as one of the DAX leaders, but also as one of the five best companies in the energy and materials sector in the German-speaking DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

The CDP score is based on disclosure of CO2 emissions, rated on a scale of 0 to 100, and performance in avoiding CO2 emissions (scale from D to A). Years of transparent reporting on CO2 emissions and actual climate protection activities formed the concrete basis for ThyssenKrupp’s score.

For example, ThyssenKrupp has optimized its energy consumption by 2.2 terawatt hours since fiscal 2013/14. The company’s mid-term goal is to improve energy efficiency by around 3.5 terawatt hours by 2020. That equates to roughly 1.3 million tons of CO2.

Sustainability is an integral component of ThyssenKrupp’s business model, and energy efficiency is one of the company’s strategic goals. Thomas Fußhöller, Head of Sustainability at ThyssenKrupp: “Around two thirds of energy consumption at ThyssenKrupp is already covered by ISO 50001 energy management systems. By 2020 we will have almost 100% coverage.”

Developing energy- and resource-conserving products together with customers is part of ThyssenKrupp’s innovation strategy. In the InCar plus project, for example, the Group developed 40 new solutions for the automotive sector which together save around eight grams of CO2 per kilometer driven. With water electrolysis and redox flow batteries the company is currently developing two energy storage solutions to facilitate the transition to renewables. Further important developments include the conversion of industrial emissions into valuable chemicals, and cross energy management in which industrial consumers are adapted to the changing supply of renewable energies.

ThyssenKrupp is a diversified industrial group with traditional strengths in materials and a growing share of capital goods and services businesses. Over 155,000 employees in nearly 80 countries work with passion and technological expertise to develop high-quality products and intelligent industrial processes and services for sustainable progress.
