Cassini awarded “Best Technology of 2014” by Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today’s editorial board

cassiniCassini receives second confirmation of being among the best innovations within ophthalmology

The Hague, the Netherlands (January 21, 2015) – In Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today’s (CRST) annual article, members of the editorial board share their selection of best innovations of 2014. In the 2014 edition, Cassini has been awarded “Best Technology of 2014” by Dr. Jackson, founder and director of Jacksoneye in Lake Villa, Illinois and Dr. Packer, ophthalmologist and president of Mark Packer Consulting.

Both ophthalmologists believe Cassini’s biggest impact will come from improving outcomes based on Cassini’s Total Corneal Astigmatism (TCA) information. Cassini Total Corneal Astigmatism provides cataract refractive surgeons critical information on both anterior as well as posterior corneal astigmatism, allowing for highly accurate correction of corneal astigmatism. Correcting astigmatism is critical for achieving superior outcomes for more than 50% of all patients. Current cataract protocols typically take into account astigmatism on the anterior surface of the cornea only.

The distinction of being the CRST “Best Technology of 2014” is a confirmation of the great market penetration of Cassini in 2014 and a confirmation of another recent recognition awarded by The Ophthalmologist magazine in which Cassini was elected “Best Innovation of 2014”.

Previous clinical studies have demonstrated that posterior corneal astigmatism could be a factor in generating unexpected postoperative outcomes.[1] Research has shown that selecting toric IOLs based on anterior corneal measurements could lead to over-correction in eyes that have with-the-rule astigmatism (vertical steep axis) and under-correction in eyes that have against-the-rule astigmatism (horizontal steep axis). In addition, there seems to be a large variety in the relationship between anterior and posterior astigmatism in pre-cataract populations of patients.

“Treating Total Corneal Astigmatism as opposed to anterior astigmatism only will help achieve better refractive outcomes for cataract patients. In addition, the ability to analyze the Total Corneal Astigmatism properties pre-operatively will prove to be a critical element in selecting the appropriate patients for premium cataract surgery and will therefore help to reduce refractive surprises and dissatisfied patients.” Says Jeroen Cammeraat, CEO at i-Optics.
