Calcutta boy gets rare innovation award

Smogathon is an initiative aiming to fight the smog with innovations and technology. “Over 92% of the world’s population inhales unhealthy air and over seven million people worldwide die prematurely every year because of smog. It needs to stop and we look for a hero, who could solve the problem of air pollution” says the entity’s website, which, it seems has found the hero it was looking for in Rito Sur, of Indrio Technologies who has just been awarded the 2nd laureate of Smogathon 2018.

Ritobrata Sur, CEO and founder of Indrio Technologies

Indrio in Bengali means senses. It is no rocket science to deduce that a company that is stretching the horizons of laser-based sensors for chemical detection and control will call itself Indrio Technologies. Especially considering the fact, that the key man behind the extra-sensory thrust is a Bengali by birth – Rito Sur. Rito, a Stanford Phd, has dedicated his life to bridging the gap in commercial chemical sensing and is credited with founding and leading Indrio Technology’s thrust forward. Not a futile dedication, as, Indiro Technologies is virtually on the threshold of a breakthrough, developing vehicle exhaust sensors that can be used to reduce NOx emissions by a whopping 70%

The company makes the most compact, laser-based sensors for chemical detection and control. It is focused on making sensors for gas-phase chemicals. As a matter of fact, what sets Indrio Technology apart is that theirs is perhaps the only type of sensor that can function at extreme heat without the need for calibration and at ultra fast speeds. These advantages are critical for success in a vastly wider market than traditional types of sensors. Experts opine, these sensors will have the capability of fundamentally changing how chemical processes are controlled.

Indrio is currently engaging in proof-of-concept trials with OEMs. They will still need 2 years to reach full commercialization, since such an exercise has never been attempted before. Once the initial hurdles are crossed, Indrio proposes to scale up and bring down the cost through the Auto market. Once this vital acceptance is achieved, the doors to market sectors, like energy, healthcare, security and information, food
