ABOUT ROOM TO READ:

Room to Read is an award-winning, non-profit organization working to transform children’s lives through literacy and gender equality in education. Our core belief is that world change starts with educated children. We focus on two critical phases of a child’s educational development: primary and secondary school. First, Room to Read operates our Literacy Programme in primary schools to help all children obtain reading skills and develop the habit of reading – the foundation of all learning. We provide educational materials, libraries, safe classrooms, teacher training and curriculum development, depending on the needs of the region and local communities. Second, recognising that girls in our countries of operation are at a much higher risk of dropping out in secondary school, we provide them with extra support through our Girls’ Education Programme. This holistic programme combines mentoring, financial and academic support, life skills training and community engagement. To date, Room to Read has benefited more than 10 million children across the 10 countries in which we work: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia. Our Literacy Programme operates in more than 18,000 schools and our Girls’ Education Programme supports more than 38,000 girls.
