Empretec (Part of UNCTAD) to recognize the best stalls.
Kolkata, February 27th, 2016. Al-Souk an Arabian flea market is being organised by the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among the college students. Empretec, the entrepreneurship wing of United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will evaluate the efforts of the participants and give certificates to the best run stalls.
At Al-Souk, the students of the BESC are to attempt replicate a desert flea market, perhaps for the first time in this parts of the country. In its maiden attempt, a total of 18 stalls will be set up by students spreading their ware – from chocolate savouries to pet accessories and things in between, including traditional Bengali sarees and fine art pieces. Additional attractions will include artists offering on the spot portrait, nail art, street food and jugglery and games.
“The idea is to instil the spirit of entrepreneurship in the students and provide them with a platform so that they may learn hands on, by sampling of the setting up and conducting businesses” said Mr. Miraj Shah, the Vice-Chairman of the college.
Al-Souk, as an event has been conceptualised and is being executed exclusively by BESC students who have been involved in every aspect of Al Souk. “It is not merely about the setting up of stalls as part of a venture that ends in the counting of the profits” said Prof. Vijay Kothari. “We encourage students to get into the details of even the most minute of the details that encompass marketing, communication, planning, organisation for example, so that they can equip themselves for life at large”- remarked Prof. Dilip Shah, the Dean of Students Affairs, BESC.
All in all, the event would turn out to be one of its kind and the fraternity of students is its focus as always.
BESC provides a solid campus experience in the heart of Kolkata, with temperature controlled and wi-fi enabled classrooms, free surfing stations interspersed throughout campus, a spacious cafeteria and common rooms with indoor games facilities. BESC boasts of a well-stocked library, with nearly 15,000 holdings and several internet-enabled computers, designed to meet all the students’ research needs and more.
BESC constantly strives to grow and impart learning-focused education through the introduction of new, cutting-edge courses recognised by the University of Calcutta. The Institution is especially committed to girl students, and believes in inculcating community engagement, imparting soft skills, fostering creative thinking, and empowering all pupils with leadership skills that will stand them in good stead not only in the competitive and constantly changing environment of the global job-market and workplace, but also help them become leaders within their respective communities.
(Avneesh Seth is pursuing B.Com (Hons) in the BESC. A voracious reader, a prolific writer and a thinker at large, he has quietly carved-out a distinct niche for himself in the college campus and is a permanent fixture in the elite team of BE-ites who do the college proud in the Fests circuit of Kolkata – winning accolades and lifting trophies.
He runs his own business, tops the examinations he takes, spearheads the college efforts in matters elocutory and still finds time to write one-liners that are literally a howl. For Avnish, and may his tribe increase, is seriously contemplating the life of a stand-up comedian – someone who can call a spade a joke and still retain his winning hand, punchline… whatever!
As for the accolades and the applause, well, in his typical deadpan self deprecation, says he “who doesn’t like to be laughed at?”. Ridiculously simple, isn’t it? And yes, all ye, who didn’t get it, the joke is actually on you! – Editor)
