Invites engineering students from select universities across India to work on an IoT challenge and compete for prizes amounting to INR 9.5 lakhs

Mumbai – September 03, 2018 – Tata Communications has partnered with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and used the platform of HackerEarth, to launch a 3-month long hackathon, called, ‘The Grand India IoT Innovation Challenge’ (#giiotic), for engineering students from 26 select colleges and universities across India. Riding on the theme, ‘Solutions that create a better society,’ students are invited to build prototypes of IoT enabled solutions based on the LoRaWAN^TM specification. The students will have access to Tata Communications’ dedicated IoT network, IoT platform and expert mentorship offered by Tata Communications and an opportunity to compete for prizes amounting to INR 9.5 lakhs.

With global advancements in technology, a strengthening local startup ecosystem, and access to a young talent pool, India is on its way to becoming the next innovation hub for the world. The Grand India IoT Innovation Challenge is an initiative by Tata Communications to engage with India’s youth to build solutions to cater to the digital transformation needs that will enable government bodies, corporates, private institutions, amongst others, to make data driven proactive decisions, thereby enhancing organisational and public engagement and transforming our living and work spaces into a smart environment.

The 3-month long challenge is divided into three phases: idea submission, prototype development and the grand finale. Tata Communications will provide the students with Raspberry Pi kits, access to LoRaWAN-based technology, expert mentorship, and more to build impactful IoT solutions and guide them through this journey.

New Delhi, 7th December 2017: Leading international real estate consultants JLL India released the report, ‘Workplace Powered by Human Experience – an India perspective’ in association with the Confederation Indian Industries (CII) at the Facilities Management Conclave 2017, today.

Commenting on the report findings, Sandeep Sethi, Managing Director – Integrated Facilities Management, West Asia JLL India says, “Workplaces today are constantly evolving to deliver an authentic human experience to employees. However, Indian employees want more than just a functional workspace – creative, inspiring office spaces are a significant factor that now drives employee engagement in the country. Through this research, we have looked at the evolution of the Indian workplace and examined the trends that influence how office spaces are being used to empower the workforce of the future.”

The report reveals:

• 98% of the Indian respondents want their companies to appoint someone at work, who can oversee the change and drive their well-being and experience at work.
• Globally, offices in India are the second densest after Japan on the basis of people sharing their open-plan work areas. Against the global average of 45 persons sharing the office space, Japan leads with an average of 68 people followed by India, where 52 people share the same open-plan work areas
• Around 69% of Indian respondents are very engaged and 74% say they can work effectively.
• Indian professionals are the most mobile, engaged and effective within their offices in comparison to their counterparts in Asia region

The report closely examines the increasing importance of human experience as a key differentiator driving employee engagement, empowerment and fulfilment at work. It looks at various office parameters like density in offices, mobility within offices, employee engagement, innovation at workplace and enthusiasm for workplace change.

The report also highlights the changes that are desired in workplaces across countries, including India. More than 7000 respondents across 12 countries participated in the worldwide survey.

Indian employees name creativity, happiness, and personal learning and development as the top three contributors to unique workplace experiences. Levels of employee engagement and workplace effectiveness are higher in India than any other country surveyed.

first session on ‘Confluence of Talent, Resources and Governance’ took a refreshing look on how to imbibe and implement the strong pillars of talent, resources and governance required to build world-class institutions. The panellist-audience dialogue brought to light the principle role of academia in bridging the gap between corporates and academics.

The second session on ‘Best Practices and Next Practices – Learn, Work and Lead’ opened dialogues on new concepts, ideas and next practices. Contemporary views on classroom teaching, online learning, blended learning, use of CII platform for industry collaboration and optimising role of IT platforms were noted as resourceful for education in digital era. Dr. C R Chavan, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management; Mr. Hanuman Tripathi seasoned entrepreneur and Kevin John, GM Strategic Alliances, Rustomjee Academy for Global Careers (RAGC) were the panelists for this session. Academicians and corporates exchanged their thoughts on the role of stakeholders and relevance of curriculum. Digitised education was another topic with many inputs from senior leadership with faculty specifically emphasising the role of multi-media for teaching students in city and rural classrooms.

Some key takeaways that emerged from these discussions include training the trainer, nurturing relationship with alumni and staying connected with the regulatory bodies. It also emphasised the fact that education does not happen in the confines of the classroom but happens in the market place. An individual progresses while resolving problems of society. India’s largest Employability Skills Test to Commence across 29 states and 7 UTs on the occasion of ‘World Skills Day’.

New Delhi, July 2017:  Leading Employability Assessment Company Wheebox in association with premier consortium partners AICTE, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Pearson Education and India’s leading HR technology outsourcing firm PeopleStrong launched India’s largest Employability Skills Test across 29 states and 7 UTs on the occasion of ‘World Skills Day’. The final year graduates, post-graduates and diploma holders from engineering, polytechnic, ITIs, state-run colleges & management schools can take part in the Wheebox Employability Test (WEST).

The registration for online assessment for educational campuses commences on 15th of July on wheebox.com/west and last date of conducting proctored examinations across campuses will be 30th October, 2017.  Students can register online at wheebox.com/west and take an online test measuring individual abilities in numerical and problem solving skills along with English, basics of information technology (IT), and behavioral traits. The duration of the online test is 70 minutes and is available in  both Hindi and English. The assessment test provides initial transcript and detailed scorecards for each module to the candidate highlighting the strengths and improvement areas. These scores are shared with 110 organizations across 10 Sectors in India aiming to give the candidates a snapshot of their capability.

In a span of 100 days over 5000 campuses and a million of candidates will make it the largest study on employability anywhere in the world. Last year the study encompassed over half a million candidates from talent supply and from demand side over 150 large corporations from 15 sectors participated in the study. The employability test attempts to make a meaningful matchmaking between talent demand and supply for the job market. The study and findings will be part of India Skills Report 2018 which will be published during Global Skills Summit on November.

India Skills Report 2018 study will bring to light the future skills in demand across 18 sectors in India and the potential hiring intent in 2018 conducted by PeopleStrong, the skill supply study will be gauged through an online assessment by Wheebox on English Language, Cognitive abilities, IT Skills, Psychometric and Domain for Sectors such as Manufacturing, Retail, Infrastructure, IT/ITES, Health Care, BFSI, Electronics, Core Engineering, Travel and Tourism.

 Central Electronics Ltd(CEL) is a PSU under the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, which has pioneered Solar Photovoltaics in the country and has the distinction of having manufactured India’s First Solar Cell in 1977 and India’s First Solar Panel in 1978 and installed India’s first solar power plant in 1992. More recently, CEL developed India’s first indigenous flexible solar panel for use on the Science Express in 2015.

Manoj Sharma PRO said that CEL took up “Manufacturing Excellence” programme under “Good to Great” (GtG) project of CII in September, 2014 in its new Automated Module Manufacturing Line. Under this project, CII task force has worked with CEL team for putting in place modern quality management processes and continuously improving quality and reducing wastages.

Phase II of this project was completed in September, 2016 and CEL achieve remarkable results including:

labor productivity increased by 50%, power expense decreased by 41%; 5S score (representing shop floor improvement) is going up every year. Employee suggestions (Kaizens) increased from 5 (2015-16) to 78 (2016-17) average   Solar panel production cost   decreased by about 10%.

These achievements by CEL team were highly appreciated by the CII “Good to Great” (GtG) task force at its meeting held at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi recently.

Mumbai May 25, 2017: GVK Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Limited (MIAL), the company that administers the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) was awarded the top rank at the 30^th Kaizen Conference & Competition held on May 16 by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for creating a reusable dummy aircraft from scrap material in the renovative category of the awards. The annual awards by the prestigious industry body are given to organizations in recognition of their contribution for continuous improvement in business processes and management.

MIAL spokesperson said, “Our participation for the award was triggered after the immense appreciation we received from across the world after the mock drill exercise held in March this year. The dummy aircraft on fire had caught everyone’s attention. It was then we decided to apply for the award.”

“It is indeed an honour to receive this prestigious recognition, which is a reflection of our unstinting efforts towards ensuring cost efficiency and optimum utilization of time and resources, speaking volumes about our unswerving commitment towards environmental preservation and operational performance,” the spokesperson added.

This year MIAL’s Aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) team came up with the idea of creating an in-house dummy aircraft from scrap material. It was an innovative step to come out of a regular dilemma of using a scrap bus to represent an aircraft during the mandatory biannual emergency drill.

After working on it for 2 months, the MIAL team created the dummy aircraft that was first used for a realistic simulation of aircraft crash for an airport emergency drill held in March this year. The dummy aircraft has been made in such a manner that it can be reused even after being used in a fire drill exercise.

The cost-effectiveness and easy to handle features of the dummy aircraft makes it beneficial for the team to opt for it than taking an actual scrap aircraft or a scrap bus for the drill. It can also be used as a simulator for other purposes like training of fire fighters.

The creation of dummy aircraft caught attention of the jury and the audience representing well known corporate houses from the country, for its purpose, skill and innovation involved in making it.

New Delhi: July 8, 2016: Skill India will be celebrating its first anniversary on 15^th July, 2016 and marking the day, the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will be inaugurating the first edition of “IndiaSkills Competition” on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day.

IndiaSkills is a national competition steered by Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to select the best talent who will lead India’s participation at the biennial WorldSkills International Competition scheduled at Abu Dhabi in 2017. The opening ceremony will be organized at Vigyan Bhawan on 15^th July, 2016, while the main competition will be held at Pragati Maidan on 16^th and 17^th July, 2016.

Commenting on the occasion, Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) said, “We are about to complete one year of Skill India and it’s a proud moment for us to celebrate our achievements and milestones over the last one year. Shri Rohit Nandan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship said, “IndiaSkills is a big opportunity for the youth of our nation to showcase their skill sets on a global platform like WorldSkills International Competition, which is globally recognized as Olympics for Skills and is also recognised by UN, where candidates from more than 75 member countries participate This is our effort to bring recognition and respect to our country’s vibrant youth and make them more employable as per industry standards, thereby transforming the skills, labour and employment landscape of India. We are thankful to the Hon’ble President to have given us his consent to be a part of our celebrations”.

Skill India has been quite close to the President’s heart. In a recent initiative, he has ensured that 1500 employees at, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, get certified under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) component of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), across 18 job roles. The program has ensured that the people working at the President’s house get oriented to their job roles, are assessed on their existing skills and then certified basis the National Skills Qualification Framework.

In order to select the best talent to represent India at IndiaSkills, MSDE and NSDC have completed more than 80 regional competitions in 24 skills/trades including hair stylist, welding, car painting, auto body repair, graphic designing, robotics to name a few.

Close to 4820 candidates registered to compete this year. Around 40 organisation like Mahindra, Tata, Maruti, Toyota, CII, FICCI, NASSCOM, CREDAI, NID, NIFT, have come together to make IndiaSkills a success (including consortium partners). The Sector Skill Councils are ensuring standards aligned to National Skill Qualification Framework are being followed in the competition to monitor the quality and standards of the competition which will be important to follow to compete at a world scale.

The shortlisted candidates from these events will qualify for the final selection for WorldSkills International Competition at Abu Dhabi, 2017. The competition will conclude with a closing ceremony on 17^th July, 2016. It is a platform that will bring youth, industries, and educators together and provide youth an opportunity to compete, experience, and learn how to become the best in the skill of their choice.

At the last event organized at Sao Paolo, Brazil, in August 2015, a team of 29 candidates (all below 23 years of age) participated in 27 skills and won 8 medallions of excellence.

This event will bring together key stakeholders including Central Ministries/Departments, State Governments, leading Industry Bodies, and trainees. Partnerships with all these stakeholders is vital to ensure Skill India’s success.

Achievement Highlights:

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) that was launched last year also saw some great results with close to 20 lakh people getting trained under it across 32 sectors and 416 job roles, covering 616 districts across 29 States and 6 Union Territories.

The ITI ecosystem also witnessed a huge boost with 141 new ITIs creating an additional capacity of 1.73 lakh seats over the last one year. MSDE has initiated a range of cross-sectoral partnerships, across Ministries and Departments to scale up skill training efforts. The Ministry has signed an MoU with 14 other entities like Ministries of Telecom, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Steel and Mines, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Department of Fertilisers and Department of Pharmaceuticals, Airport Authority of India, NTPC, PowerGrid Corporation etc. on the skills agenda and infrastructure support for centres for skilling.

MSDE also partnered with countries like UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, Australia etc. on transnational standards to increase opportunities of employment for Indian youth in these geographies as well.

Under the private skill training ecosystem run by NSDC, more than 61 lakh students have been trained since 2014, in a skill of their choice. Also, 151 training partners have been added to the ecosystem.

The guidance of Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, has also led to comprehensive reforms in the Apprenticeship Act. Due to this, apprenticeship training has seen an increase of 15% reaching the mark of 3.10 training held this year. Recently, the Union cabinet has approved an outlay of Rs.10,000 crore for providing apprenticeship training to over 5 million youngsters in the next four years in its quest to create more jobs. This is the biggest monetary reward initiative in the last seven years for skill development in India. The money allocated will be provided as incentive to industries to take more apprentices on board.

The Innovation Club – launched at the occasion of NIT’s annual techno management fest “Kritanj-2016, Crossroad of Innovation”– aims at developing a fundamental change of instilling the innovation and entrepreneurial attitude and creative thinking at academic and industry level among students. The innovation club was launched by Mr. Aloke Mookherjea, Former Chairman of CII (Eastern Region) in the presence of many distinguished guests from industry as well as from the field of academics such as Prof. Dr. B.C. Mal, Vice chancellor – JIS University; Mr. U.S. Mukherjee, Deputy Director – JIS Group; Prof. (Dr.) S.M. Chatterjee, Chairman – Board of Governance, JIS Group; Dr. Asit Guha, Advisor, JIS Group and many more. On the occasion also about 1000 excited students eagerly and patiently awaited for the launch of their ‘dream’ club.
