National, February 9, 2018 : Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, has been selected by ESA, the European Space Agency, to deliver and operate Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS). The DIAS will combine real-time geo data from Copernicus, the world’s largest single Earth Observation program, with data from multiple sources and turn it into information products for companies in sectors such as manufacturing, insurance, utilities, agriculture, forestry, urbanism and emergency services.

For example, it can help:

  • Scientists understand the impact of climate change,
  • Governments and cities better manage and anticipate urban development,
  • Oil and gas companies evaluate and manage risk,
  • Farmers better manage their crops and yield.

Open platform for innovation

On behalf of the European Commission and the European Space Agency, Atos will lead a newly-created consortium, composed of DLR, e-Geos, EOX, GAF, Sinergise, Spacemetric, Thales Alenia Space and T-Systems.

Atos will be responsible for integrating, delivering and operating the Cloud platform which will integrate specialized data sources. This new platform will make the data from the European Union constellation of Sentinel satellites and from data providers, more accessible. This will make it possible for third parties (industrial players, institutions such as national space agencies, SMEs and start-ups) to build innovative business services based on satellite data. Atos, with its partners, will build and commercialize the new services.

Atos’ technology and expertise combined with those of its partners will bring speed, flexibility and robustness to the platform which is capable of handling vast amounts of data in different formats.

The Atos Codex portfolio of data services will provide DIAS with analytics and cognitive capabilities to turn raw satellite data into valuable insights for several industries.

Key value for society

Providing new services that integrate accurate and real-time information from satellites offers the following major advantages:

  • Greater understanding of how our planet functions– key earth observation and remote sensing data is increasingly valuable to understand the functioning of our planet and ecosystems.
  • Faster prediction– combining and processing large volumes of complex data from multiple sources can produce unique insights in near real-time.
  • Improved decision-making– organizations can now easily integrate earth observation data into their business value chains providing insights that have not previously been within reach.

Stéphane Janichewski, Head of Defence & Aerospace Market at Atos concludes:

We have spent several years investing in this offering in order to help scientific organizations, public organizations and enterprises of all sizes benefit from combining large volumes of Earth Observation data with third party data sources. We see immense opportunities to address some of society’s greatest challenges such as wildlife protection, climate change or resource scarcity.”

According to the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC), which brings together professionals in the sector, the market for services based on Earth observation data is expected to grow by 10% to 15%[1] over the next few years, with multiplication of innovative services in many areas.

The platform will be available to customers worldwide in June 2018.

LONDON, 13 June 17 – Millions more children could end up getting an education, when Opportunity International (OI) shares its experience and data on education microfinance, enabling others to invest in education.

With 263 million children out of school, banks and other financial institutions have been reluctant to lend into developing countries’ education because – in their view – of the small margins and high risks.

But with backing from philanthropists, donors, and impact investors, OI’s EduFinance (OEF) programme has been running counter to this trend, helping children to access affordable private education by lending to schools and to parents. To date, it has helped 2 million children access quality education.

The non-profit organization currently works with 12 microfinance institutions in ten countries and its education loan portfolio is growing rapidly, almost quadrupling since the end of 2012. It now wants to accelerate this progress by working with more financial institutions.

“We want to be an industry catalyst for affordable education, and to be truly transformational we need to persuade more players to invest into this sector,” said Nathan Byrd, who runs the OEF programme.

“That is why we are planning to share the enormous amounts of data that we have gathered, helping others to measure risk extremely accurately and to reduce that risk almost to zero,” he said.

At the end of March 2017, the OEF total active portfolio consisted of nearly 45,000 loans worth just over US$21.4 million and benefitting nearly 450,000 children. Repayment rates on its loans are more than 99 percent.

“In a very real sense, we are filling the ‘missing middle’ by which medium-sized financial institutions fail to lend into this market, put off by small margins and government regulation,” he said.

“This is a major market failure, which we simply have to correct,” he said. “Education holds the keys to poverty reduction for literally millions of families around the world.”

At the end of 2016 OEF was given grant funding to build the first open-platform credit model for education lending, developed initially for Uganda.  The platform will offer automated credit algorithms, so that others can minimize the risks of lending into the education sector, allowing banks to go rapidly and effectively to scale with their education lending.

  • Education is one of the most effective routes to exit poverty. If we want to reduce poverty and inequality around the world, we must increase access to education, which also contributes to better health, political stability, and economic growth. Despite this, some 263 million children are currently out of school. The reasons for this are complex, but they are at least partly about a lack of resources. Governments and donors are unable to cover all the gaps.
  • Opportunity International (OI) (http://opportunity.org.uk/) is a non-profit microfinance organization, working in the education sector since 2007, pioneering new solutions through its education microfinance programme, known as EduFinance (OEF) (http://edufinance.org/).
  • OEF currently works with 12 microfinance institutions in ten countries, channeling small amounts of money to large numbers of schools and parents. These loans allow schools to build more capacity and teach more children. Loans also allow parents to send their children to low cost private schools.
  • Demand for these services is high. Since taking this work to scale in 2013, OEF has impacted more than 2 million children in ten countries so far (http://edufinance.org/news/2017/education-finance-reaches-2-million-children).
  • Microfinance is efficient and effective. It could also be transformative. (http://edufinance.org/blog/2017/05/g7-statement-education-needs-more-resources-microfinance-can-help)
  • In the long-run, OEF aims to demonstrate that microfinance can be commercially self-sustaining and therefore to attract more private money to the sector. By attracting more private money to the sector, it will help to close the funding gap.
  • As a non-profit organisation, OEF’s singular objective is to enable people to lift themselves out of poverty and disadvantage. OI does not impose any religious or ideological agenda.
  • Nathan Byrd joined OI in May 2012. Prior to that, he directed operations for the International Rescue Committee in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he was responsible for a budget of US$21.5 million. A US citizen, he studied at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Indiana University, Saint Louis University, and the Cornell University College of Engineering (http://edufinance.org/who-we-are/edufinance-team/nathan-byrd).

The next-gen algorithms to enable credit access to an additional 15 lakh customers annually, with incremental retail assets of INR 68,858 crores at very low risk

Mumbai, 31 May, 2017:  As the consumer credit industry continues to grow with increased demand fueled by the digital transformation in the market, TransUnion CIBIL today launched CreditVision® to expand the eligible consumer base and drive access to finance for many more deserving consumers. CreditVision® is a transformational way of looking at the past credit behavior of a consumer. CreditVision® algorithms predict risk and expand credit opportunities by intensively studying the trended data that unlocks the patterns in payment, exposure and spend behavior. These algorithms, which are based on the past 36 months of trended data, enable identification of comprehensive and specific customer behavior and are delivered in an easily usable and quantitative format to enable financial institutions to use these customer insights for making more precise lending decisions. This would pave way for possibilities to expand the retail credit market and promote access to cheaper, easier and faster credit opportunities, which is a major aspect of financial inclusion in this digital age.

TransUnion CIBIL’s analysis of consumer credit demand and behavior using CreditVision®, shows that it could enable credit access to an incremental 15 lakh borrowers every year without compromising on risk. In addition, the algorithms have identified another 20 lakh borrowers who currently have access to banking credit, but would be eligible for higher lines of credit or higher loan-to-value.

With CreditVision®, TransUnion CIBIL aims to partner with credit institutions to provide insights beyond the CIBIL Score and help understand the nuances of consumer credit behavior thereby supporting them to better gauge the risk profile and provide credit to many more deserving borrowers.

Speaking at the CreditVision® launch, the Managing Director and CEO of TransUnion CIBIL- Mr. Satish Pillai said, “Financial inclusion and credit penetration are the keystones of propelling India on a sustainable high growth trajectory. With the launch of CreditVision® in India, we reinstate our commitment in supporting our member institutions on driving profitable business growth and credit penetration by providing credit access to many more deserving consumers. These new age CreditVision® algorithms are a definite game changer for the credit industry which will enable phenomenal market expansion while helping define lending strategy for a growing nation on a digital path like ours.”

CreditVision® may be the much needed tool for Indian credit sector which is burdened with recognized NPA and stressed assets amounting to almost 15% of their total asset. With the exception of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), most sectors of commercial lending, which forms the bulk of banking assets, are showing low single digit credit growth. Retail credit, which benefitted from disciplined information and analytics driven decisioning, has grown substantially at low delinquency rates and is justifiably looked upon as a savior for Indian banking. However, overenthusiastic lending can also make retail borrowers over leverage, such as the case in 2008 and CreditVision® will help mitigate these challenges and expand the Indian credit market while keeping delinquency in check. This will enable banks to grow profitably, even on a risk adjusted basis, in the retail space.

Banks and credit institutions in India are enthusiastic on the prospects of CreditVision®. Speaking on the benefits of CreditVision® for the industry,

Mr. Rajesh Kumar, Group Head- Retail Credit & Risk at HDFC Bank said, “CreditVision® represents the future ready bureau of the big data world enabling advance analytics. The rich insights on nuances of consumer behavior that CreditVision provides will help the industry identify and provide credit opportunities to a larger customer base thereby helping improve credit penetration and access to credit”.

“CreditVision® trended attributes are definitely more insightful than a point-in-time snapshot provided by the traditional bureau data. This helps map the credit evolution of the consumer and could have potential use case in underwriting and exposure management strategies. By using CreditVision®, we hope to penetrate to a much larger customer base, thus significantly increasing our retail outreach.” said Mr. Rakesh Bhatt, COO, Bajaj Finance Limited.

“Traditional bureau data is based on attributes derived from a point in time snapshot of customer behavior. CreditVision® provides insights into historical trends instead of a point in time snapshot which significantly enhances predictions of future customer behaviours thereby improving lending decisions. This will augment our ability to not only predict risk but also identify key consumer drivers that would impact critical marketing decisions.” , added Mr. Harjeet Toor, Business Head – Microbanking, Cards, Retail & MSME Lending at RBL Bank.

TransUnion CIBIL is committed to support the credit industry with content, insights, products and solutions to drive business growth while facilitating access to finance for deserving consumers. CreditVision® is set to help the credit industry drive retail credit growth while enabling increased access to credit for consumers thus triggering credit penetration and financial inclusion in India.

Tata Communications MOVE global mobility platform is built on the company’s partnerships with 900 mobile communications service providers and new 35% stake in Internet of Things solution provider Teleena

London, UK – February 23rd, 2017Tata Communications, a leading provider of A New World of Communications™, today announces its entry into the global USD 4 billion mobile data connectivity and cross-border Internet of Things (IoT) market. The company is unveiling the Tata Communications MOVE platform that will enable people and things to become seamlessly connected on a global scale.

“With more than 3 billion Internet users globally and billions more connected ‘things’ from activity trackers and smart home hubs to connected cars and street lights, we live in a truly digital world,” said Anthony Bartolo, President, Mobility, IoT and Collaboration Solutions, Tata Communications. “We believe that the future of this digital world lies in how all of these ‘things’ connect – and that everything should be born connected. So, imagine a world where there could be embedded connectivity within everything – straight out of the box, with instant and seamless access to the Internet, anywhere in the world. That’s our aim with Tata Communications MOVE. It is a platform that enables companies to embed global connectivity in anything, improving the user experience, creating completely new revenue streams, and fulfilling the promise of a truly digital world.”

Tata Communications MOVE is part of the company’s long-term strategy for its mobility services portfolio and its vision of creating an access and usage agnostic, cross-border mobile experience for people and things. The platform is underpinned by Tata Communications’ global network, partnerships with 900 mobile communications service providers globally, and recent investment in Teleena. Teleena is an IoT connectivity specialist and mobile virtual network enabler, whose technology manages the operational complexity and reduces the cost of IoT deployments for businesses. Tata Communications’ investment has made it the single largest shareholder in Teleena with a 35% stake.

The combination of Teleena’s IoT technology and Tata Communications’ global network – which today connects 4 out of 5 mobile subscribers – lowers the barriers for brands to introduce new IoT-enabled services for engaging with consumers in new ways. Underpinned by enterprise-grade secure connectivity across 240 countries and territories, Tata Communications MOVE also paves the way for new industrial IoT applications to generate operational efficiencies in sectors such as manufacturing and logistics.

In the first phase of the roll-out of Tata Communications MOVE, the platform encompasses global cellular IoT and SIM connectivity, with further enterprise and mobile network operator capabilities to follow later in 2017, enabled by the world’s largest and most advanced wholly-owned network. Over 25% of the world’s Internet routes travel over Tata Communications’ network, and the company is the only Tier-1 network provider that is in the top 5 by routes in 5 continents.

“The market needs large-scale operators such as Tata Communications that are able to scale up activity in a market so far populated by small commercial aggregators and mobile virtual network operators[1],” said Dario Talmesio, Principal Analyst and Practice Leader, Europe, Ovum.

Vinod Kumar, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Communications, said: “With global, ubiquitous connectivity comes the power to unleash unimaginable possibilities in how brands serve and engage with their customers and partners, redefining business models across industries. As a company that has built unparalleled global network reach and platforms that simplify and accelerate cloud and data-powered innovation over the last 15 years, today marks an inflection point for our business with the introduction of Tata Communications MOVE, which will serve to unlock the next phase of connectivity for humans and machines.”

New service available in 130 countries across emerging and developed markets

tata-communicationsMumbai, India – November 29th, 2016Tata Communications, a leading provider of A New World of Communications™, launches today the latest addition to its IZO™ cloud enablement platform – IZO™ SDWAN. As the myriad of different applications, clouds, data sources and connections create complexity for organisations, IZO™ SDWAN helps them detangle this complexity and propel their growth through seamless, secure and easy-to-manage connectivity across 130 countries spanning both developed and emerging markets.

Underpinned by Tata Communications’ global network, IZO™ ecosystem, and partnerships with the world’s biggest cloud companies, IZO™ SDWAN boosts agility and flexibility for organisations. By enabling the instant deployment of branch office networks anywhere in the world, the new service helps organisations to expand and introduce new products and services faster, and adapt to rapidly changing market conditions.

Essilor, a world leader in ophthalmic optics is one of the beta customers of IZO™ SDWAN. The company is using the new service to facilitate its expansion into new geographies. “Given the crucial role that different cloud applications play in our business globally, the agility, flexibility and reliability of our network is paramount,” Marc Tanguy, Director, IT Technology Services in Asia-Pacific, Middle-East, Russia and Africa, Essilor, said. “Essilor’s mission of improving lives by improving sight, for people everywhere in the world, means it is vital for us to have the right solutions that help us to smoothly expand into new geographies, including the fast-growing markets of APAC and Africa. A next-generation, software-defined hybrid network will enable us to connect new locations in an instant, making us more agile, and empowering us to improve the lives of many more people through improved access to quality vision care products.  We are happy with the proof of concept and look to a new dimension of digital transformation with IZO™ SDWAN.”

IZO™ SDWAN is a fully managed and modular overlay service that is tightly integrated with the underlay – the world’s largest and most advanced IP network. That is why it is quick, easy and risk-free to integrate into organisations’ existing network set-up – be it the public Internet, a hybrid network or a private WAN – boosting the efficiency of bandwidth use while reducing OPEX. By providing employees with faultless, secure access to applications and data, and empowering them to collaborate securely and seamlessly wherever in the world they are, IZO™ SDWAN enables organisations to drive further efficiencies, boost productivity and improve the bottom line.

“A new kind of platform economy is emerging, paving the way for innovative co-created services and business models that transform entire industries,” says Genius Wong, President, Global Network Services, Cloud and Data Centre Services at Tata Communications. “But the management of a multitude of applications, clouds and connections which power the platform economy can be hugely challenging for organisations. Our IZO™ cloud enablement platform and its latest addition, IZO™ SDWAN, harness our unparalleled global reach and our partnerships to tackle these challenges and enable organisations to unleash the growth potential that new markets, geographies and business models bring through a scalable, borderless and easy-to-manage network.”

Joel Stradling, Research Director, Current Analysis says, “The expansion of Tata Communications’ IZO™ portfolio with an SDWAN service strengthens the company’s offering with new capabilities that allow enterprises to take advantage of greater service agility and automated provisioning.  Tata Communications’ IZO™ SDWAN proposal is wide, addressing a sliding scale of business requirements, and telling a compelling story built around the company’s global network footprint.”

Tata Communications has developed multiple variants of IZO™ SDWAN to suit its customers’ different business and technology requirements. These variants consist of its own patent-pending technology, and one that builds on technology supplied by Versa Networks, a Gartner ‘Cool Vendor’. This ensures maximum choice and flexibility for organisations.

To meet its customers’ constantly growing needs for cloud connectivity, Tata Communications is deploying 20 new cloud gateways for IZO™ SDWAN, with several more in the pipeline. These gateways, the IZO™ ecosystem offering secure, reliable connectivity to the clouds of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and Salesforce, and a single-pane-of-glass management portal, enable organisations to virtualise their network with scale, while ensuring the CIO has full visibility and control over the network. Through the use of edge virtualisation, which enables the deployment of multiple virtual networking functions (VNFs) within the same equipment, enterprises are able to reduce the volume of equipment at their branch locations, accelerating the roll-out of new applications and services.

Fujitsu Consulting India is also a beta customer of IZO™ SDWAN, using the new solution as part of its next-generation hybrid network to enhance service delivery and corporate IT services access. Mohammed Shahed Khan, Group Head, IT Infrastructure & CISO, Fujitsu Consulting India, said: “Given the multitude of IT projects we undertake for our customers, the flexibility, scalability and reliability of our network is paramount. That is why we are currently deploying a next-generation hybrid network – it will enable us to accelerate service delivery and connect new applications and devices in an instant. SAP Announces €2 Billion Investment Plan, New Innovations, Acquisitions and Network of SAP IoT Labs to Unlock

Next Wave of Value from the Internet of Things

sapWALLDORF — Sept. 29, 2016 — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced investment plans of €2 billion over five years to help business and government entities benefit from the proliferation of sensors, smart devices and Big Data that is transforming business with the Internet of Things (IoT). SAP plans to accelerate innovation in its IoT solution portfolio, increase sales and marketing, scale service, support and co-innovation, and grow its ecosystem of partners and startups in the IoT market, which is estimated to reach €250 billion by 2020.

“With billions of connected devices, we now have the potential to reshape society, the economy and the environment,” said Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP. “SAP HANA is the data platform we knew would unlock the Internet of Things. Today SAP is making another bold investment to help our customers seize the benefits of live business. Only SAP empowers businesses to innovate from the core to the edges to the networks.”

SAP IoT: From Information to Insights, Action and Live Business

While business and public sector entities have unprecedented access to more information and real-time feeds, they still have difficulty tying it all together across operating locations, business units and functional teams. SAP IoT aims to make sense of Big Data from the multitude of things through IoT solutions that apply machine learning and integrate with the core business applications of SAP S/4HANA. SAP IoT includes solutions connecting people, partners, things and the physical environment, enabling organizations to extend and enrich business processes with real-time, live intelligence so that they can see where opportunities exist, achieve new operational efficiencies, and reimagine business models, products and services to deliver more immediate customer and stakeholder value. SAP IoT seeks to enable connected business and connected society, addressing urban and rural areas and spanning agribusiness, infrastructure and energy, health, defense, manufacturing, consumer and transportation industries.

Innovation in New Solutions: Industry 4.0 Solution Packages

SAP is introducing Industry 4.0 packages that feature IoT solutions to enable customers’ digital business strategies. The jump-start package is designed to initiate operational and business system connectivity as a foundation to monitor equipment effectiveness and provide insight into shop floor operations. The accelerator package also has this functionality, and adds an automated, paperless, manufacturing execution and control environment by supporting manufacturing planning and execution, performance analytics and advanced plant maintenance. Both packages are complemented by the SAP Distributed Manufacturing application for additive manufacturing 3D printing services. The jump-start and accelerator packages are available immediately. SAP plans to introduce the third Industry 4.0 solution package, the “advanced” package, at a later date to provide advanced manufacturing insight and controls, machine learning functionality and predictive analysis for quality and maintenance operations. SAP also plans IoT package solutions to address the unique digital operations of cities, agriculture and energy industries.

Innovation in the IoT: PLAT.ONE, Fedem

SAP IoT provides a comprehensive, integrated technology stack from connectors to the IoT foundation and applications, business network and business process layer, enhanced by machine learning and predictive analytics. SAP has acquired PLAT.ONE, an enterprise-grade IoT provider that simplifies the process of creating, deploying and managing complex IoT solutions. Founded in northern Italy, PLAT.ONE provides expertise and technology to accelerate the availability of key IoT capabilities in SAP HANA Cloud Platform, such as advanced lifecycle management for IoT devices, broad device connectivity, strong IoT edge capabilities that work seamlessly with a cloud back end, end-to-end role-based security and rapid development tools for IoT applications.

SAP has also recently acquired Fedem Technology, a Norwegian company specializing in advanced engineering analysis and building software for multibody dynamic simulation and lifetime calculation of structures and mechanical systems under the influence of complex loads. With this acquisition SAP plans to build an end-to-end IoT solution in which a digital avatar continuously represents the state of operating assets through feeds from sensors, replacing the need for physical inspection with a “digital inspection.” Additionally, the solution is intended to consider complex forces in play and detect both instantaneous consequences of one-off events and long-term health effects of cyclic loads, making possible accurate monitoring of maintenance requirements and remaining-life prediction for assets.

SAP IoT Labs: Enabling Global IoT Transformation Across the Globe

SAP plans to establish locations around the world to collaborate on Industry 4.0 and the IoT with customers, partners and startups. SAP IoT labs are intended as lighthouse locations and primary access points for IoT research, development, proof-of-concept modeling and incubation, with IoT showcases, thought leadership, expertise and infrastructure for strategy and product co-innovation. SAP plans to increase investment in consulting and knowledge transfers with dedicated innovation adoption consulting and IoT universities at the sites. Planned locations include Berlin, Johannesburg, Munich, Palo Alto, São Leopoldo and Shanghai, with SAP and partner experts in areas of specific IoT focus native to each region, such as Industry 4.0, logistics, cities and digital farming. The labs are intended to provide customers with access to co-innovation resources including design thinking experts and workshops, and interactive demos of IoT-related technology including autonomous systems (such as drones and robotics), IoT security, machine learning and 3D printing.

The SAP IoT Promise in Real Life: Trenitalia and SAP Event

SAP’s IoT announcement comes on the eve of an IoT customer showcase event, where SAP will join with executives from Trenitalia, Italy’s largest train company, to display technology innovations and the way predictive maintenance technologies are currently transforming the modern transportation industry. Follow @SAP_IoT and #SAPIoT to join key parts of the event live via Periscope on September 29.
