This timepiece, named 1770 after the year Manufacture Royale was established, captures the very essence of the brand. On the one hand, the creative verve of a bold and contemporary design, straight from the imagination of Eric Giroud. On the other, the infinite expertise that comes with the grand tradition of Swiss watchmaking, channelled into a movement that has been developed and built entirely in-house, and whose centrepiece is one of watchmaking’s most compelling complications: the flying tourbillon. As though suspended in its carriage, offset at 7 o’clock, it leaves us free to admire the escapement, complete with a lever and an escape wheel in silicon, the ultimate innovative material to ensure a movement’s precision and performance. Entirely decorated and finished by hand, this same movement is housed inside a pink gold case, itself enlaced by two “brancards” in what is a hallmark of Manufacture Royale. The openworked dial creates multiple levels to offer glimpses of the movement in a technical and contemporary spirit.

The only way to capture the essence of the Skull is to look it straight in the eye. This is the first time that, when you look at the time, time stares right back. Because Skull’s eyes are alive. The right eye becomes gradually darker as the 65 hours of power reserve go by. The left eye conceals a continually rotating seconds dial. An “out of the box” watch if ever there was, Skull dispenses with minutes to fully focus on the liquid hours, the signature of an HYT watch. This fluid travels along a capillary in the form of a skull, and bending the glass into this form was a significant challenge. Also, power had to be calculated to be sufficient to push the liquid around the sharp angles while maintaining precision timekeeping over 12 hours. Nor are these the only developments. The two vertical bellows are in constant motion as their imperceptible expansion and compression drives the liquid through the capillary to make the skull even more alive. 50-piece limited series.

Inspiration comes out of the blue for Jeanrichard, whose iconic Terrascope lends itself to two original iterations in a new 39 mm size. The first opts for the laidback, stylish colour of denim with a structured blue dial and a matching ostrich strap. The second stands out for its blue hour-markers which are suspended above a matt white dial. Diamonds embellish the bezel in steel, a metal echoed in the bracelet. The Britain S/S15 Runway – The Birds and The Bees
Burberry adds to its watchmaking repertoire a new limited-series collection. Comprising four versions, The Britain S/S15 Runway – The Birds and The Bees is inspired by the hand-painted prints from the Prorsum womenswear show for Spring/Summer 2015. The straps, in damson, daffodil, peacock or dragonfly, are crafted from the same leather worn by the models in the Prorsum show. Each echoes the vibrant patterns of the different runway outfits, in a mesmerising rainbow of colour. As always, design is courtesy of Christopher Bailey, artistic director and CEO of Burberry.

A hundred years after watchmaker Stadler-Bouché had a building erected on Weissensteinstrasse in Solothurn, Switzerland, Cover pays tribute to its headquarters with a limited-edition timepiece. Like the building itself, this new watch is imbued with a tradition of refined horology. Indeed, shortly after completion, the building was bought by one of Switzerland’s world-renowned schools of watchmaking. This is where generations of prestigious watchmakers learned the skills of their trade, until 2002 when this “Uhrmacherschule” moved into larger premises. Cover bought and fully renovated the building, which in 2003 became its new headquarters. Thanks to this new vocation, watchmaking continues to thrive within these four walls. To celebrate the centennial of such a historically significant building, Cover has chosen an open-heart movement to beat inside this anniversary watch, revealing the art of Swiss watchmaking from the inside. Beneath an elegantly sober exterior, the latest addition to Enicar’s Prestige collection, the Hyperion CH337 Chronometer, reserves a multitude of carefully orchestrated details. SPEAKE-MARIN | Spirit SeafireHaving made minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, tourbillons and other horological sleights of hand, the most British of Swiss watchmakers presents his first chronograph, Spirit Seafire, a name inspired by another first: the Supermarine Seafire which was the British Royal Navy’s first carrier-based airplane. Remarkably distinctive, this masterful composition is set in a new Piccadilly case in titanium. Superbly staged against a mat black dial, the three-dimensional indications feature white Super-LumiNova applications which glow green in the dark for excellent legibility. CHOPARD | Happy Sport Medium AutomaticA chic and whimsical icon with its diamonds moving freely around the dial, the Happy Sport line created by Caroline Scheufele celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2013. To mark this event, Chopard unveiled the new Happy Sport Medium Automatic. The mesmerising charm of the famous moving diamonds, one of the most fascinating jewellery innovations in recent decades, is thus further enhanced by an unprecedented mechanical dimension. On the dial side, an elegant guilloché motif provides an ideal playground for the playful diamonds, while the sapphire caseback affords a chance to admire the finely decorated automatic movement graced with straight Côtes de Genève.
ORIS | Oris Artix Pointer MoonDriven by a powerful spirit of innovation, Oris adds a new model to its Artix collection: the Artix Pointer Moon. At its heart beats the 761 calibre developed in-house on a Sellita base movement. Its secret lies in the fact that it drives, in addition to the date, a moon-phase display indicated not on a classic counter but instead by a hand pointing to the various cycles on the inner bezel ring. The hand moves forward every 12 hours, thus keeping remarkably accurate track of the positions of the earth’s satellite, unlike more traditional “romantic” moon-phase displays. The Artix Pointer Moon distils an aura of refined elegance underscored by a specially redesigned dial featuring subtle plays on the structure of its two discs. To ensure perfect readability by moonlight, the hands and hour-markers are naturally luminescent.
ETERNA | 1948In 1948, Eterna unveiled a groundbreaking invention in the technology of automatic movements, with a ball-bearing mounted rotor. By facilitating the rotation of the oscillating weight or rotor around its axis, this revolutionary innovation reduced wear on crucial parts, and in doing so increased the lifespan of the movement. The year 1948 will remain forever engraved in the history of the mechanical watch; Eterna even adopted these five ball bearings as its logo. The company now returns to this iconic timepiece in the new 1948 watch, which is of course equipped with the same ball-bearing system as the original, and reprises the famous curved lugs.
BALL WATCH | Fireman Storm Chaser ProA professional tool watch tailored to satisfy the demands of storm chasers, the most eminent specialist being Ball Watch’s ambassador, Dr Joshua Wurman, the Fireman Storm Chaser Pro combines the high-performance services of a chronograph and a telemeter. To determine the distance between an observer and the point of lightning impact, the user starts the chrono as soon as lightning is seen and stops it when thunder is heard. The seconds hand then shows the distance, in kilometres, on the telemetric scale. Like all Ball watches, luminosity and legibility are central to the Fireman Storm Chaser Pro, whose hour-markers and hands are fitted with luminescent micro-tubes containing H3 gas. This technology has no need for an external source of light or energy, and is up to 100 times more effective than conventional luminescent coatings.
ANDERSEN GENEVE | Grande Jour & Nuit Edition 2014Andersen Genève returns to an exceptional watch, imagined in 2000, in response to demand from collectors and admirers of rare mechanisms that bring to life equally rare displays. For this new Grande Jour & Nuit, indications have been transferred, highly legibly, on the dial with daytime hours (6am to 6pm) and night-time hours (6pm to 6am), in addition to a small minutes dial. The long tip of the central hand points to daytime hours while the shorter end indicates night-time hours. It jumps when the small minute hand has made one complete revolution of the dial. Production of the Frédéric Piguet movement having ceased, Andersen Genève proposes a limited series of 50 watches – 30 in red gold and 20 in white gold – each equipped with this now rare mechanism.
