Dear Friends,
As of today, 2.23 lakh of people are in camps, over 300 lives have been lost in ten days of torrential rain, landslides and floods 82,442 people have been rescued, but thousands remain yet to be rescued from isolated spots.
Today the Prime Minister is visiting the state and we hope to get substantially better support from the Centre.
ihs
The flood situation continues to remain grim. The road, rail and air transport continue to be disrupted. Communication too is heavily affected in the flooded areas.
The three Jesuit centres most affected: Sameeksha, Kalady, Edathua ITI and Loyola, Aluva have been relatively safe. In the latter two, they have moved out to safer locations. We hope and pray that there won’t be any substantial damage to the buildings.
The relief work has been coordinated by the state authorities, local agencies, Church agencies and ordinary folk. We are overwhelmed by the generous support and offer of support from many. Here is the Kerala Jesuit proposal:
We have joined hands with the local relief efforts wherever we are and will continue to do. For the long term efforts, we are focusing on the Wayanad area, one of the worst affected, through our own TUDI, Eachome . We are working out the concrete details. We will revert to you with request for concrete support.
Meanwhile, some of you have been offering financial and other support. For those of you who would like to contribute financially here are the bank details.

]]>Service offerings leverage machine learning platform Tookitaki, to enable banks to automate anti money laundering and reconciliation management
Bangalore (India) – August 7, 2018 – Mindtree, a global technology services and digital transformation company, guiding its clients to achieve faster business outcomes, is using artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help banks improve their ability to detect financial crimes and enhance reconciliation management. These service offerings are made possible through a partnership with Tookitaki’s machine-learning- powered platform.
Banks and other financial institutions are challenged by both the rising sophistication of financial crimes worldwide and increasingly complex regulations requiring strict operating and reporting standards. The ongoing efforts to manually detect money laundering, dealing with false alarms and fragmented reconciliation processes are costly and time consuming. There is an urgent need for these institutions to automate many of these processes, reducing errors and accelerating their response times to incidents.

To address these challenges, Mindtree and Tookitaki are now offering these services:
“There is a compelling need for banks today to automate many traditionally manual, intensive, error-prone tasks,” said Kamran Ozair, Executive Vice President and Head of Banking, Financial Services and Insurance at Mindtree. “This partnership combines Tookitaki’s predictive modeling capabilities and Mindtree’s deep expertise in helping enterprise clients capitalize on artificial intelligence and machine learning to help banks run their business more efficiently.”
“Rapid development in artificial intelligence and robotics technologies has brought in massive adoption of automated technologies across industries,” says Abhishek Chatterjee, Founder and CEO of Tookitaki. “For banks especially, who are dealing with strict regulations and little room for error, automation can drive quality, productivity and profitability. Our partnership with Mindtree has made it easier and more efficient for customers in the financial services industry to introduce artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities into the critical space of regulatory compliance.”

]]>Rani’s Voice joins public-private coalition of leading organizations as world marks a day against trafficking in persons.
NEW YORK, July 30, 2018: As the world marks a day against trafficking in persons, Rani’s Voice, a global social enterprise focused on human trafficking prevention, is joining forces with Thomson Reuters in a public-private coalition, to help step-up the fight against financial crime and modern slavery.

Human trafficking and other financial crimes have a devastating impact on individuals and communities around the world. Every year, an estimated $2.4 trillion in proceeds from this and other causes of human misery such as forced prostitution, terrorism and drug trafficking are laundered through the world’s financial markets and banking systems. Independent research conducted by Thomson Reuters reveals that 47% of the 2,300 organizations it surveyed have been a victim of at least one type of financial crime in the last 12 months.
The high level of incidence means that financial crime is now a depressingly common practice. Public-private cooperation is key to the identification and implementation of innovative strategies that address this challenge and safeguard the integrity of the global financial system.
The formation of the public-private coalition was announced in January 2018 at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Its objective is to mobilise and influence decisions-makers at the highest levels to improve awareness of the extent of financial crime and modern slavery, promote more effective information sharing, and establish enhanced processes to share best practice. The inclusion of Rani’s Voice in the coalition gives a voice to the millions of enslaved people throughout the world, drawing attention to their suffering, and highlighting the importance of finding new ways to secure their freedom.
Rani’s Voice is led by Rani Hong, who at the age of seven was stolen from her family and sold into slavery. As a survivor of child slavery, Rani has dedicated her life to speaking for those without a voice, becoming one of the foremost advocates for combating the crime of human trafficking.
Rani Hong, CEO of Rani’s Voice and former UN Special Advisor: “The United Nations has designated today as World Day against Trafficking in Persons and this gives us cause to celebrate freedom. While I am conscious of how far we still need to go to end the trafficking in children and young people, I believe we are taking a significant step forward through this alliance of influential organisations.”
Phil Cotter, Managing Director, Risk, Thomson Reuters: “We welcome the addition of Rani’s Voice to the coalition as we look to raise more global awareness of financial crime as a critical challenge with grave human and financial costs. Increased collaboration is key to fighting financial crime and Rani’s passion and expertise will be invaluable as we work to bring forward innovative, high-impact solutions that help disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks that cause incalculable harm around the world.”
The founding members of the public-private coalition include Thomson Reuters, Europol and the World Economic Forum. Its membership has expanded to include the Royal United Services Institute, the Atlantic Council and now Rani’s Voice.

]]>Washington, D.C., July 5, 2018 – Students with a wide variety of disabilities, including Autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, learning, attention, mental health and other disabilities are improving the lives of people in need in Washington, D.C. The teens are making food for people experiencing homelessness, sorting goods in food pantries, visiting senior citizens and improving area parks.
The program is a partnership between the Edlavitch DCJCC, which has more than 25 years of proven leadership in providing safe, outstanding volunteer service opportunities, and RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for people with disabilities. The program, called “Summer of Service” is a special summer day camp filled with community service opportunities for Washington-area middle and high school students. It is open to students with all abilities as youth with and without disabilities are invited to participate in the inclusive, welcoming and successful program.

The non-sectarian program is staffed by experienced CPR-certified professionals. Staff members include para-educators and special education teachers from the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) programs for children with Asperger’s along and with EDCJCC inclusion staff.
Students in the program earn 30 Student Service Learning credit hours per week in a safe, fun, fully integrated and enriching environment.
Said Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, who co-founded both the EDCJCC community service program decades ago and RespectAbility five years ago, “This is an opportunity for youth with disabilities to show how much they can contribute to people in need. For far too long people have viewed people with disabilities through a lens of pity. However, people with disabilities also have talents they want to contribute to making their neighbors happier, healthier and better off.”
Fully one-in-five people have a disability. Disabilities can be physical, cognitive, mental health or other issues that are barriers to every day living. There are six million students with disabilities in America’s public schools and Summer of Service is a model for other areas to follow. Today 1,107,606 African American/black students with disabilities are enrolled in America’s public schools. Likewise, there are 1,531,699 Latino students with disabilities in our schools today. Overall, only 65 percent of students with disabilities graduate high school compared to 84 percent of students without disabilities. Similarly, only 57 percent of black students with disabilities graduate high school compared to 76 percent of black students without disabilities. Only 59 percent of Latino students with disabilities graduate high school, compared to 79 percent of Latino students without a disability.
“It is vital for students with disabilities to see themselves early on in terms of what they CAN accomplish, and not what they cannot” said Mizrahi. “Some of the most talented people in history had disabilities. Beethoven was deaf and Harriet Tubman lived with epilepsy. Selena Gomez has lupus, Steven Hawking uses a mobility device, and Stevie Wonder is blind. Richard Branson, Whoopi Goldberg, Daymond John, Charles Schwab and Harry Belafonte have dyslexia.”
“It’s wonderful to be able to provide an opportunity for teens of all abilities to gain experience in making a difference while also helping the vulnerable population throughout DC. It’s a win-win for everyone,” said Cassidy Jones, Inclusion Programming Manager at the EDCJCC’s Inclusion Programming – programming for individuals of all abilities.
Today there are vast changes for people with disabilities who want to have jobs and live independently, just like anyone else. RespectAbility and its partners are championing progress. Last year there was a 4-fold improvement in the number of new jobs for people with disabilities; 14,479 people with disabilities got new jobs. In Maryland 5,944 people with disabilities got new jobs. Employment levels for people with disabilities in the District of Columbia lag considerably behind those of other areas in the DMV.

RespectAbility, a national nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for people with disabilities, is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. They are devoted to expanding educational and employment success for people with disabilities. For more information, see www.RespectAbility.org.
For more than 25 years, the Washington EDCJCC’s Morris Cafritz Center for Community Service (MCCCS) has been a leader in providing community service opportunities in the Washington-area. Anchored by four Days of Service, including the area’s largest Christmas Day volunteer effort involving more than 1000 participants annually, the EDCJCC provides high-impact volunteer projects year around to address unmet needs of the most vulnerable in our city. All volunteer opportunities are open to all. MCCCS provides support to the DC community in need regardless of age, race, gender, disability, or religion. Visit EDCJCC.org/Inclusion to learn more.
RespectAbility is inviting people to give their opinions on a wide range of issues impacting people with disabilities. While the majority of people either have a disability or a loved one with a disability, people do not need to be personally connected to disability in order to have a valued opinion. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and you can win $250 for participating in it.

]]>The post MakeMyTrip joins WWF-India’s #GiveUp initiative to help #BeatPlasticPollution this World Environment Day appeared first on Core Sector Communique.
]]>Tuesday, 5 June, New Delhi: India is the global host of the 2018 World Environment Day on 5 June 2018. ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ – the theme for World Environment Day 2018 aims to inspire governments, industries, communities and individuals to reduce the consumption and production of single-use plastics. Supporting the campaign, MakeMyTrip has joined WWF-India’s #GiveUp initiative by pledging to make its offices Zero Single-use plastic and help tackle the plastic menace facing the world today.
It is believed that in the last decade, the world has produced more plastic than it has in the whole century. India alone generates 60% of the world’s plastic waste, which has adverse impacts on the health of our oceans, rivers and marine life. Over the past few weeks, several events and campaigns across the country have highlighted the issue of the irreversible adverse effect of single use-plastics on the environment.

Speaking about the indiscriminate spread of discarded plastic, Ravi Singh, Secretary-General and CEO, WWF-India, said, ‘’Globally, plastic pollution, caused by the production and use of single-use plastics, is deteriorating the environment. As we continue to develop practices which reduce our impact on the planet, our pledge to minimise single use plastics and ultimately phase out its usage across all our offices is an effort to build a sustainable planet for future generations. We believe it is our responsibility to take up such initiatives and inspire corporate partners, schools, colleges and other stakeholders to do the same. We are extremely happy that MakeMyTrip has taken on the #GiveUp initiative and hope that more companies will come forward to take up this challenge and work towards a greener planet.”
Deep Kalra, Founder & Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, said; “The planet of plastic is not just a doomsday scenario, we are closer to it than most can imagine. It pains me personally to see how Plastic pollution is suffocating our environment and is wrecking the future of humans and animals alike. Every step taken to reduce plastic consumption especially single-use plastic will go a long way in helping course correct and bring us back from the brink. We are happy to partner with World Wide Fund for Nature and join their #GiveUp challenge to raise awareness against single-use plastic.”

Joining the cause, MakeMyTrip has collaborated with WWF in their initiative, GIVE UP TO GIVE BACK CHALLENGE to spread awareness about the scourge of single-use plastic. As part of the entire initiative, MakeMyTrip Founder and Group CEO, Mr. Deep Kalra has posted a video supporting the cause and extending the chain further by tagging his peers from India Inc. and requesting them to support the #QuitPlasticMovement.
MakeMyTrip has given up single-use plastic in the office premises and distributed over 10,000 durable jute bags to all the employees and other NRC companies. MMT is also installing plastic crushing machines in locations such as Andamans, Ladakh, Gurgaon and Bangalore. In order to further reduce the carbon footprints, MMT has planted over a half of million trees near Udaipur from the Rs. 5/- contribution that travellers make while booking on the platform.
WWF-India is taking forward the ‘Give Up to Give Back’ initiative started earlier this year, with several activities and events planned across the country aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastics through awareness and information. WWF-India has pledged to #GiveUp single-use plastic by minimizing and ultimately phasing out usage of all single use plastics in all its offices across India. The organizational policy on the same includes guidelines on plastic use and recycling, and a transparent data monitoring program to track the use of ‘Single Use Plastics’ in WWF offices in India. Globally, WWF is supporting UN Environment’s ‘tag game’ on social media, with staff and network offices all over the world showcasing various ways to #BeatPlasticPollution and encouraging others to do the same.

The key areas of the work of WWF-India include conservation of key wildlife species and their habitats, management of rivers, wetlands and their eco-systems, promoting sustainable livelihoods, environment education and awareness activities within a variety of social structures, mitigating the impacts of climate change, transforming businesses and markets towards sustainability and combating illegal wildlife trade.
