]]>New era in luxury wearables introduces Montblanc mobile payment solution, allowing mechanical timepieces to act as digital wallets for the first time
Bridging the worlds of traditional watchmaking and wearable technology, Montblanc ensures that watch aficionados no longer need to choose between mechanical beauty and digital functionality. The Montblanc TWIN Smart Strap is an accessory that can be attached to most timepieces to upgrade it with the smart features needed to thrive in a fast-paced world where staying connected has become an essential part of everyday life. The simple addition of this elegant and discreet solution transforms any mechanical timepiece into a connected companion that can receive notifications, track fitness and serve as a mobile payment solution with the new Montblanc Pay payment platform.

“With the new TWIN Smart Strap Montblanc has further narrowed the gap between the analogue and digital watchmaking worlds,” explains Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc CEO. “The idea of a Smart Strap is rooted in the growing desire for digital functionalities to be added to classic timepieces, which are emotional objects with deep history and meaning to their owners. That is why we developed a smart solution that can be attached to most timepieces of any brand. The timepiece remains untouched, while Montblanc TWIN Smart Strap is the innovative companion that elegantly enhances this relationship.”
Montblanc TWIN Smart Strap consists of two parts – a smart module with a curved display and a specially designed strap that can be mounted onto almost any timepiece.

The thin and light weight smart module made of high quality watchmaking stainless steel and covered by a curved special glass highly resistant to scratches and shocks acts as a mechanical clasp to fasten the timepiece, with a sophisticated design that blends in with most timepieces. Under the elegant protective glass lays a curved monochrome OLED display to read notifications and an LED light array to be visually notified, on top of vibration alerts. Bluetooth connectivity ensures smooth communication with the Montblanc TWIN companion app for iOS and the NFC chip with Secure Element allow easy contactless payment. The module is IP68 water resistant and allows for up to a week autonomy on a single charge.
The high quality and comfortable strap can be mounted on most timepieces without any tools, and be adjusted for any wrist size. The strap exists in two different widths – 22 and 20mm – which adapts to the standard width of horns for most male watches. The strap itself is made of a high-quality rubber composite with structural blocks specially designed to allow guided and easy adjustment. The upper part of the strap exists in four different versions to allow personalisation and match classic but also more contemporary types of timepieces: black calf leather, vintage brown calf leather, black nylon and black & grey striped nylon.

Introducing a new era in mobile payment solutions, the TWIN Smart Strap unveils a new feature – Montblanc Pay – a new mobile payment platform that brings contactless payment to its owner’s wrist, allowing mechanical timepieces to act as digital wallets for the first time and pay with a simple wrist gesture at all compatible payment terminals. Montblanc Pay allows the user to digitalise up to five credit cards into the Montblanc Twin companion app. Developed in full partnership with Visa and Mastercard to ensure the highest security standards, ease of use and reliability, the Montblanc TWIN Smart Strap is equipped with security sensors that deactivate the payment function in case of theft or loss, with state-of-the-art data encryption to prevent hacking of credit card data and other personal information.

Because capturing time has always been the purpose of the fine art of watchmaking, the Montblanc TWIN companion app reinterprets this purpose digitally by beautifully representing the user’s daily activities in a ring pattern. Each of these daily rings becomes a digital diary when zoomed into, giving the user visual feedback and insights that can be used to take back control of his or her time. “Memories” is a new feature that automatically synchronizes with the user’s iPhone, copying and showing all the calendar events in the app. For the period of time during a calendar event, the algorithm automatically copies any picture or video taken from the phone into the respective calendar event. This allows the user to easily access his visual memories by simply looking back into calendar events in the Montblanc TWIN app, creating a deeper emotional bond with the timepiece through this advanced function.
Montblanc TWIN Smart Strap is available from August 2018 with a starting RSP of 390€. It will be available through Montblanc Retail channels, Montblanc website and a network of authorized resellers and in a selected number of countries. For more information visit www.montblanc.com

Wireless connectivity at the gate will allow the aircraft to connect to vital aircraft, airline systems
INDIA – 9 February 2018 – SITA is providing wireless connectivity on the ground to Air Mauritius’ new fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft, keeping the new-generation aircraft connected to the vital back-end systems no matter where they fly.
In October 2017, Air Mauritius introduced the first two new-generation Airbus A350 aircraft with a further four expected to join the fleet over the next few years. The Airbus A350 is one of the most advanced aircraft flying today. It brings with it a unique complexity with large data exchange in its own unique protocol – Media Independent Aircraft Messaging (MIAM). This is designed to exchange large amounts of data between the aircraft and ground systems using multiple communication channels.

SITAONAIR – SITA’s sister company focused on connected aircraft – has developed a solution to understand this complex MIAM communication and simplify integration into airline systems and processes. Additionally, Air Mauritius wanted this exchange over Inmarsat SwiftBroadband (SBB). This required SITAONAIR to work closely with all stakeholders, including Airbus and IBM, to ensure the successful launch of A350 operations and in the process, hosting the entire service in the SITA ATI Cloud.
At the gate, SITA’s wireless connectivity allows the airline to quickly and securely exchange vital aircraft information generated during flight with both the airline’s own systems as well as with Airbus and IBM. At the same time key information ahead of the next flight can be uploaded, including passenger and flight information.
This connectivity allows for rapid exchange of aircraft information which will help Air Mauritius speed up aircraft turnaround times while ensuring seamless management of the aircraft’s systems by ensuring complete connectivity globally.
Donald Li Ying, Vice President – Information Systems at Air Mauritius, said: “As Air Mauritius begins to introduce a new-generation of connected aircraft such as the Airbus A350, it is vital that we have a partner that can support the transfer of data both in the air and on the ground. This is vital to leverage the full benefit that connected aircraft can bring to the airline and our passengers.”
Maneesh Jaikrishna, SITA Vice President Indian Subcontinent, Eastern & Southern Africa said: “The continued growth in connected aircraft such at the Airbus A350 is opening new possibilities to enhance the passenger experience on board as well drive new efficiencies in how these aircraft are managed.”
“These new aircraft have become flying data centers which rely on world-class connectivity in order to exchange information on everything from engine data, passenger requirements to updates at the destination. This requires reliable, fast connectivity no matter where the aircraft finds itself. At SITA we are working with airlines globally to support that connectivity and ensure that the full benefits of connected aircraft can be unlocked.”
A total of 30% of airlines are already operating connected aircraft within their fleet and 73% of airlines will either operate or have taken delivery of connected aircraft in the next three years, according to SITA Air Transport IT Insights 2017.

]]>Device Fingerprinting Enables Certificate-based IoT Device Security

SAN FRANCISCO—RSA Conference 2017, Booth N4410—Feb. 16, 2017—Ruckus Wireless
, a part of Brocade, today announced version 5.1 of its Cloudpath
ES security and policy management software. The latest software release enables organizations to automatically and securely connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices using certificates—the gold standard of device security—allowing IT to establish policies governing the behavior of those devices. In conjunction with the Cloudpath software certificate authority (CA) and supported standards-based protocols, the new capabilities allow organizations and IoT device manufacturers to easily and automatically secure a wide range of connected IoT devices without changing existing security infrastructure.
Gartner reports[1] that IoT endpoints will reach an installed base of 20.4 billion units by 2020. In addition, AT&T’s Cybersecurity Insights Report[2], which surveyed more than 5,000 enterprises around the world, found that 85 percent of enterprises are in the process of or intend to deploy IoT devices. Yet, according to the report, a mere 10 percent of those surveyed feel confident that they could secure those devices against hackers.
“The use of IoT-connected devices is now poised to grow exponentially, with IoT technology investments expected to reach $1.29 trillion by the year 2020 across multiple vertical segments and industries,” said Rohit Mehra, vice president, network infrastructure, IDC. “As with other aspects of IT infrastructure and applications, security risks and vulnerabilities associated with IoT are now a key area of focus for enterprise IT and LoB managers on an ongoing basis. These enterprises, along with their technology solution providers, need to find reliable, cost-effective ways to better secure their connected IoT applications and infrastructure, a challenge that Ruckus seeks to address with these new capabilities.”
Cloudpath ES 5.1 software introduces device fingerprinting, a technique that allows IT to automatically identify IoT device types by comparing the device profile to a device fingerprint database. Together with other Cloudpath software features, the new release delivers the following benefits:
can be used to secure it. Both approaches enable IT to establish IoT device-specific policies. For example, IoT devices may be authorized to connect only to the cloud service with which they’re associated.
“Traditionally, configuring IoT devices has been a huge headache for IT. These devices not only expose organizations to new security threats, but often require manual onboarding, assuming they can be onboarded at all,” said Kevin Koster, chief Cloudpath architect, Ruckus Wireless Business Unit, Brocade. “Cloudpath helps IT departments ensure their IoT devices don’t put their network and their users at risk, while enabling IoT device manufacturers to meet their own customers’ need for IoT device security.”
The latest release of Cloudpath ES software will be generally available in the second quarter of 2017. For more information, please visit the Ruckus Wireless Web site.

]]>Social media and emerging trends in Psychology
The machines have risen. We live in a world that is increasingly connected, device driven and digitally convenient. And, if I am not wrong, more Indians have mobile phones than access to a toilet. Now, this awe inspiring mobile penetration is not a bad thing, considering how easy so many aspects of our lives have become, changing for the better. We connect with long lost members of the family and friends irrespective of where they are in the world, pay our bills and receive our remittance using the net, seek out our entertainment digitally, not to mention call for help (or a cab) when we are stranded. But then again, when was the last time you dialed a number from memory? Or for that matter, can you recall the current balance in your bank account without peeping into your phone? No?
Okay, we see that you have liked all the pictures your “bestest” friend from school has posted in Facebook (including among others, the so obviously over fried samosas she had from the roadside joint in some Godforsaken town), but when did you meet her last? You keep yourselves abreast of each other’s diet plans and secret liaisons virtually, but do you even want to meet her? Spend some time? Share life stories? Discuss future plans? Not Really. No way. Not with that creepy, crawly thing, always eager to turn the arch lights on to what she thinks is God’s answer to mankind.
Exactly! And that is why experts are extremely concerned that, as we are becoming more and more connected, we are losing important aspects of what is called the human experience. We are becoming increasingly impulsive, impatient, forgetful and even narcissistic. “When your life becomes virtual”, good old Sigmund seems to be telling us from wherever he is, “the price that you pay is always cognitive”. The immediacy of the internet, the efficiency of the smart phone and the anonymity of the chat room may be pandering to your needs for instant gratification and conspicuous consumption, but what it is extracting in return is terminally insidious. Forget about technology detracting you from interpersonal relationships and social norms, that is so 20th century. What is happening now is much more scaring. It is changing the very core of who you are.
Even as you read this, I can see you fiddle with your smart phone, feel the reassuring touch, for even as you remain in the denial mode, it has usurped a central part in your life, slowly sucking you into a void – a dark abyss to nowhere. Yeah, I also happen to know that you are so totally attached to your phone that you sleep with it and accompany it to the loo. No sweat, that’s pretty mainstream, as in natural. As a matter of fact, one study has already called this “unholy” dependence on smart phones “possibly the biggest non-drug addiction of the 21st century”. Now you know why, after posting every selfie, you continue to check your mobile as one possessed, just to see who all have “liked”, if any? But, have you ever considered a life without your phone? Going cold-turkey? Now, that is scary. But the good news is that you are not alone.
And hang on. They have even coined a term for it all – “nomophobia” (the no mobile phobia, if you may). The Psychology Today describes it as “that rush of anxiety and fear when you realize you are disconnected and out of the loop with friends, family, work and the world.” The ailments that are being directly attributed to the over-use (one commentator has even called it the “obscene dependence”) on mobile devices are already (and this is contrary to widely held, popular, public belief) well researched and well documented, almost irrefutable. These include, among others, low self-esteem, impulsiveness, sensation-seeking and highly extroverted or introverted personality. Technology dependence can also heighten the symptoms of pre-existing disorders such as social phobia, social anxiety disorder or panic disorder. One study reported that the stress levels associated with nomophobia are equivalent to those of “wedding day jitters” and trips to the dentist. The anxiety and other feelings caused by tech dependence are also chillingly real. Oh, by the way, studies have established that women are more prone to all this that I am referring to, than men.
Okay, enough of scaring. While it is true that extreme cases of digital dependence will need professional help, we can all do little things to reduce the influence on our lives and eventually emerge triumphant.
PS : They also have a term for it – Digital Detox!

The more I get sucked into the exciting world of emerging Social Media the more I am at awe. No I don’t have the answers, but questions I have in plenty. As a matter of fact, as I sit down to write this, here are the top 25 that cross my mind randomly. I have sought to list them – hash-tagged and packaged in a ready to consume format so that you too can pander to your basic needs of instant gratification. Triviality be damned and a body blow dealt to verbose ponticiation.
Please go ahead and think about them. Discuss if you may or treat them for all they are worth and just tweet them – they are all tagged and Tweetable so that they, with a little click from you, can scour the farthest corners of the net (and human consciousness) seeking the ultimate knowledge.
Feel free to TweetBack your response. Who knows, we may even end up trending with #JustinBeiber and #LoveJihad and #PoonamPandey
