]]>Get set to apply for UK’s prestigious and fully-funded Chevening scholarship programmes. They offer a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.
Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders since 1983. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of awards – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world through a rigorous selection process.
The Chevening India programme is the largest in the world offering up to 120 fully paid scholarships and fellowships this year. One year master’s scholarships are given to outstanding Indian graduates with a minimum of two years’ work experience to study any subject of their choice at any recognised UK university. HSBC sponsors three scholars from India annually to study in fields related to environment and sustainability.
Launching the programme for 2018-19 in Kolkata on 28 July 2017, the Acting British Deputy High Commissioner Kolkata, Ms Shahida Khan, said the programmes provide Indian aspirants with a brilliant opportunity to develop professionally and academically, network internationally, experience Great Britain and build lasting relationships with the UK.
Ms Khan said Eastern and North Eastern India has many potential Chevening scholars and fellows and hoped that eligible candidates take full advantage of this unique opportunity.
On the occasion of the Chevening launch, the Chevening Alumni India in association with Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the British Deputy High Commission organised a Public Lecture by the West Bengal Joint Secretary for Home & Hill Affairs, Mr Priyatu Mandal. Mr Mandal talked to a packed house on ‘E-Governance & Young India.’
Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding and emerging leaders to pursue a one-year master’s at any UK university. It offers financial support along with the opportunity to become part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network. Applicants from India can choose any course of study, but we particularly welcome applicants from the field of energy security, climate change, urban development, defence, security, foreign policy, trade and investment, economic reforms as well as research and innovation.
The Application Dates for Chevening Scholarships is 7 August 2017 to 7 November 2017.
The Academic year is September 2018 to August 2019
Chevening Fellowships are customised, professional development programmes designed for mid-to-senior level professionals who are looking to expand their knowledge and expertise in their specific field of work. The programmes are tailored, short courses which usually run for 8-12 weeks at a designated UK university.
The Applications Dates for the Chevening Fellowships is 7 August 2017 to 27 September 2017. Chevening Gurukul Fellowship Applications open in February. The Academic schedules are different for specific fellowships.
Fellowship Details
The Chevening Cyber Security Fellowship [Application dates: 7 August – 27 September 2017. Programme commences: March 2018] is aimed at mid-career Indian professionals with demonstrable leadership potential in the field of cyber security or cyber policy in India. This programme is running since 2014. Six fellows are sent every year to the UK for a ten week fully funded residential programme delivered at Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.
We draw fellows from the Government of India, the Indian Police Service, academia, the legal profession, entrepreneurs and industry. The course enables a small yet significant group of Indian cyber experts to get professional training on the subject enabling them to come up to speed with the best British practices. This goes a long way in contributing to developing mutual understanding between the two countries in mitigating cyber security threat and defence cooperation.
The Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Fellowship (CRISP) [Application dates: 7 August – 27 September 2017. Programme commences: April 2018] started in 2011 and has since run in partnership with Rolls Royce. The ten week programme is designed for high calibre mid-career professionals and is delivered at St. Cross College, University of Oxford. Twelve Indians and two Sri Lankans are carefully chosen for the cohort every year.
They work in the field of science, innovation, manufacturing, technology, business and related public administration with links to public policy and belong to a variety of sectors and are mostly corporate executives, entrepreneurs, research scientists, academics and public sector employees.
The Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship Programme [Application dates: 7 August – 27 September 2017. Programme commences: March 2018] started in 2011 and is designed for deserving journalists from South Asia, including seven from India. It provides an informed and evidence-based context to key policy debates and mutual understanding of international positions (including an appreciation of UK approaches), supply practical experience, and encourage dialogue on key issues.
The eight week fully funded residential programme at the University of Westminster is customised for future media leaders and opinion formers working in the areas of political, economic and business journalism in India. The programme focuses on good governance in a changing world: media, politics and society.
The Chevening Standard Chartered Financial Services Fellowship [Application dates: 7 August -27 September 2017. Programme commences: April 2018] is customised to build expertise in specialist skills such as risk management, actuarial sciences, investment management and financial regulation, which will increase the talent pool in the Indian market and provide a fillip to growth in the sector.
The objective is that the fellows return to their professional positions of influence and continue engagement with the UK to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in their field of work. The fellowship will offer a high quality professional development opportunity which will provide specialist skills to encourage innovation and help improve industry capability in India. Fellows will also gain an appreciation of the value of cost-benefit analysis of financial regulation and leave with a positive impression of the UK.
The fellowship is designed for eight high ranking mid-career professionals working in the financial sector who can potentially contribute to policy making, including Ministry of Finance and associated entities, financial regulators such as RBI, SEBI, IRDA, PFRDA, influential academics, think tanks, entrepreneurs, particularly in areas such as financial technology and asset management.
The Chevening Gurukul Fellowship for Leadership and Excellence [Application dates 1 February -16 March 2018] is a 12 week programme at a leading UK university to familiarise India’s future leaders with best practice case studies of leadership in the fields of government, innovation, health and industry in the UK through a variety of teaching methods ranging from seminars, role-playing scenarios, shadowing and site visits. This is a flagship programme running since 1997. 12 high-flying mid-career professionals from diverse backgrounds including government, public and private sector, civil society, media and politics with strong and demonstrated leadership skills are chosen.

Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s flagship global scholarship programme.
We are pleased to announce that applications for the following prestigious Chevening programmes are now open:
Chevening Masters Scholarship programme:
Around 60 fully funded scholarships for outstanding Indian graduates to study one year Masters in any subject at a recognised UK university.
Application Window: 3 August – 3 November 2015 for September 16-17 academic year intake
Eligibility: Graduates with at least two years’ work experience at the time of applying. This can include voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships.
Chevening TCS Cyber Security Fellowship Programme:
An exclusive 12 weeks fully funded Fellowship for mid-career Indian professionals at Cranfield University, which provides an understanding of policy and legislative approaches in Cyber Security and its implications for national security, commercial opportunity, crime prevention and the right to privacy. It aims to develop professionals who can effectively manage and exploit the threats and opportunities of cyberspace at the organisational level.
Application Window: 3 – 31 August 2015
Places Available: 8
Duration: 12 Weeks (7 March- 27 May 2016)
Eligibility: Minimum seven years work experience in Cyber Security/Cyber Policy issues either as a policy formulator, commentator or academic: applications are encouraged from industry, civil society, academia, and the public sector.
Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship Programme:
A fully-funded, eight-week fellowship at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Westminster, London with the theme ‘Good Governance in a Changing World: Media, Politics and Society’. This will enable 14 exceptional, mid-career journalists (seven for India) to acquire skills to carry out highly responsible roles within their media organisations and build relationships in their region.

Duration: 8 Weeks (25 January- 18 March 2016)
Eligibility: Future media leaders and opinion formers working in the areas of political, economic and business journalism in India. The ideal candidate should be a mid career Journalist from India covering political and economic sectors.
