World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 147.1 million tonnes (Mt) in March 2020, a 6.0% decrease compared to March 2019. Due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, many of this month’s figures are estimates from national and regional associations, which may be revised with next month’s production update.
World crude steel production was 443.0 Mt in the first three months of 2020, down by 1.4% compared to the same period in 2019. Asia produced 315.2 Mt of crude steel in the first quarter of 2020, a decrease of 0.3% over the first quarter of 2019. The EU produced 38.3 Mt of crude steel in the first quarter of 2020, down by 10.0% compared to the same quarter of 2019. North America’s crude steel production in the first three months of 2020 was 29.5 Mt, a decrease of 4.0% compared to the first quarter of 2019.
China’s produced 79.0 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, a decrease of 1.7% compared to March 2019. India estimates 8.7 Mt of crude steel production in March 2020, down 13.9% on March 2019. Japan estimates 8.2 Mt of crude steel production in March 2020, down 9.7% on March 2019. South Korea produced 5.8 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, down 7.9% on March 2019.
In the EU, Germany estimates 2.9 Mt of crude steel production in March 2020, down 20.9% on March 2019. Italy produced 1.4 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, down by 40.2% on March 2019. France estimates 1.2 Mt of crude steel production in March 2020, a 13.2% decrease compared to March 2019. Spain produced 1.2 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, down 14.6% on March 2019.
The US produced 7.2 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, a decrease of 6.0% compared to March 2019.
Russia estimates 5.9 Mt of crude steel production in March 2020, down 4.4% on March 2019. Ukraine produced 1.8 Mt of crude steel in March 2020, down 10.3% on March 2019.
Brazil produced 2.6 Mt of crude steel production for March 2020, down by 8.2% on March 2019.
Turkey’s crude steel production for March 2020 was 3.1 Mt, up by 4.1% on March 2019.

Members represent around 85% of global steel production.

Primetals Technologies is offering operators of continuous caster plants the new SRD (Single-Roll DynaGap) segments, a solution that further improves the interior quality of slabs for steel grades that place high demands on the casting process. The SRD segment has been specially developed for use in the area of final solidification, and it enables the upper rolls to be pressed down individually onto the solidifying strand. This enables the final solidification point to be followed precisely. SRD segments can be used together with or replace conventional types of segments. The first installation of SRD segments was carried out at one strand of a slab caster in the Ternium integrated steel works in Santa Cruz, Brazil. Tests proved a superior internal slab quality as compared to the second strand using conventional segments. The second strand of the caster will also receive SRD segments.

]]>Huge crowd cheers on debuting UAE National Rafting Team
UAE, November 3, 2016 – In the presence of His Highness Sheikh Muhammad bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, the first-ever UAE edition of the World Rafting Championship (WRC) went off to a great start yesterday (Wednesday, November 2, 2016), seeing all 87 participating teams from 28 countries competing under the Sprint and Head to Head (H2H) disciplines at Wadi Adventure in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. A huge throng of spectators cheered on some of the world’s best rafters, with the debuting UAE National Rafting Team comprising officers of the Abu Dhabi Police drawing strong support from the lively crowd. Brazil, Russia, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Norway and Japan came up with the best performances, topping the day’s Open, Masters (40+), Under 19 and Under 23 divisions.
Yesterday’s competitions started at 8am with the Sprint event, with the Head-to-Head H2H races following at 10am and running through 3:30pm with a one-hour break in between. The results are as follows:

ArcelorMittal, Luxembourg – Maturity Culture: Although all traditional safety measures were in place at ArcelorMittal’s Belval plant in Luxembourg, indicators showed that safety standards were slipping. The introduction of the ‘Maturity Project’ aimed to bring about an ambitious culture change at the plant to ensure the highest safety standards were at the forefront of everyday production processes. A large-scale leadership training programme was implemented to ensure that the plant leadership had the necessary technical knowledge and soft skills to empower staff.
Arrium, Peru – Driver Awareness Programme: Moly-Cop Peru, a member of Arrium, carried out a review that showed 87% of road transport incidents were the result of unsafe driver behaviour. They developed a Driver Awareness Programme (DAP) that engaged and trained drivers on how to make sure they return home safely. It also involved setting up structured communication channels for swiftly and accurately learning from incidents, and a formal audit programme to verify compliance with expected safety practices. The DAP has resulted in a 44% reduction of road transport incidents over the last three years.
Gerdau, Brazil – Hydraulic arm for roll shop: Safety managers at Gerdau’s Ouro Branco plant noticed that an overhead crane used in the new rolling mill every time the rolls needed to be removed for grinding unnecessarily exposed shop floor employees to the risk of falling objects. Eliminating this risk entirely by replacing the crane with a hydraulic arm made the shop floor safer, with subsequent significant improvements in Ouro Branco’s Safety Cultural Index (SCI).
HADEED, Saudi Arabia – Upgrade of ladle furnace dedusting system: The concentration of particulate matter in the air at HADEED’s long product facility during steel refining operations exceeded recommended levels. Management initiated a specialised project that upgraded equipment where necessary and optimised the overall production process. The concentration of particulate matter in the air decreased significantly from 18.8 to 6.62mg/m3.
Tata Steel, worldwide – Leadership engagement in the safety excellence journey: Tata Steel’s Felt Leadership Programme aims to put safety at the forefront of all activities and to demonstrate to all employees that when it comes to safety incidents, high level management is visibly ‘committed to zero.’ This has involved a number of initiatives with management and senior union leaders leading campaigns such as ‘Find it, Own it, Fix it’, which have led to a decrease in Tata’s Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR).
Ternium, Mexico – Minimising fire hazards in the painting line: Ternium’s Juventud plant carried out a project in order to reduce fire risk during the painting process in the painting line when handling, preparing and applying paint. In addition to establishing an emergency response procedure, monitoring systems were installed around the ovens, improvements were made to ventilation and fire protection systems were installed in storage areas.

Nearly two months ahead of the start of the world’s greatest sports event, modernization work at one of Brazil’s largest airport has been completed. Soon, 25 elevators, 21 escalators, 14 moving walks and 58 passenger boarding bridges supplied by thyssenkrupp will ensure quick and convenient transportation for over 17 million passengers who visit the RIOgaleão airport every year. The modernization work was completed in 13 months; the tight schedule meant that delivery and installation of the equipment took place in record fashion, with many new units installed while regular airport operations continued uninterrupted. “Modern airports are vital global hubs, and for major events, efficient and safe transportation of visitors is one of the biggest challenges. We are proud to have played an important part in addressing this challenge by modernizing RIOgaleão’s mobility infrastructure and helping to ensure the success of the games in Brazil,” says Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of thyssenkrupp Elevator. The airport’s newly built Terminal 3 now houses the longest moving walk in Latin America, measuring 100 meters. In addition, the new passenger boarding bridges use innovative safety technologies – a first in Brazil: They feature a European-standard automated docking system that allows precise measurement of gaps and minimizes damage to the aircraft. This is particularly important when handling the world’s biggest passenger aircraft, the A380, as at least two bridges are needed per aircraft. RIOgaleão is the only airport in Brazil able to receive an aircraft of this size. Positive effects of the airport’s modernization are already visible; new airlines have added the airport to their schedules, while existing users such as Lufthansa are increasing the frequency of their flights to and from Rio. Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), the world’s leading maritime and logistics service provider, has signed a contract with CGG to provide offshore agency support services for a new oil and gas exploration project in the Barreirinhas Basin in the equatorial margin of northern Brazil.
As a specialist geoscience company, CGG is conducting the multi-client seismic project, which will be the oil and gas industry’s first regional broadband survey of the Barreirinhas basin. ISS will provide a range of services for the Barreirinhas project including port agency, crew transfer, visa assistance and cargo services.
CGG is deploying its specialized seismic vessel, the Oceanic Vega, to acquire the 14,500-km² 3D seismic survey. The data will then be processed and analysed at CGG’s subsurface imaging centre in Rio de Janeiro.
Commenting on the new contract, Anderson Souza, ISS General Manager, Offshore Solutions, in Brazil said: “This new project demonstrates our strength and expertise in providing exceptional offshore agency services on key seismic projects in Brazil.”

With over 40 years’ experience in the shipping industry including 10 years in the fertiliser market, Mr Guilloux is working with ISS Brazil to combine expertise and presence in the sector.
Following the new partnership, ISS Brazil has created a dedicated team to attend fertiliser ship calls in all Brazilian ports and will open four more offices across the country to expand its services. Three offices will open in the southern region in Paranagua, Rio Grande and Porto Alegre – while a further office will open in Recife in the northeast, taking its total offices in the country to 14.
Offering greater value and expertise to this specialist market, the dedicated ISS fertiliser team will manage all operations and processes, while a market intelligence department will provide customers with a range of tools including comparative port information, monthly reports, port alerts and customised analysis.
Brazil imported more than 24,000 million tons of fertiliser in 2014, mainly from the USA, Russia, Morocco and Canada, giving rise to around 1500 vessel calls to mostly southern ports. ISS Brazil recently attended two ships discharging fertiliser at Hermasa Terminal, Itacoatiara, in the Amazon region.

EVRAZ signed two contracts to supply rails to Brazil. For the first time the company will ship to Latin America rails produced at its West-Siberian Steel Plant (EVRAZ ZSMK).
EVRAZ ZSMK will ship to TIISA Construction Company four thousand tonnes of 60E1-compliant rails. Head-hardened, with improved wear- and contact fatigue resistance, these rails will be laid into a 30-kilometers’ track to connect the largest Latin American pulp mill to the network of Brazil’s key railway operator, ALL (Latin American Logistics).
The other contract, for three hundred tonnes of head-hardened 60E2 rails, was signed with BR RAILPARTS. This lot will be utilised to fit out the turnout switches in a new railway constructed by the Brazilian Government.
EVRAZ scheduled first rail shipments to its Brazilian customers for February, 2015. In the end of January, the representatives of Latin American companies visited EVRAZ ZSMK to audit production and verify product quality.
“EVRAZ ZSMK Rail Mill follows the best international practices. We inspected the finished rails and verified compliance with the declared specifications, – noted Joubert Lansoni da Silva, advisor to ALL. – We intend to continue our cooperation with EVRAZ. Railway construction is growing rapidly in Latin America but there is no local manufacturer in the region. EVRAZ is a great choice for us: the company is able to offer the needed volumes and products at a reasonable price“.

EVRAZ has an annual rail production capacity of two million tonnes. The company is the leader in Russia, CIS and North America and is currently working on expanding its exports. Apart from Latin America, the Company is eyeing the markets of the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe.
