Certificates distributed to successful candidates of Commerce Plus programme.

Champaklal Doshi, Chairman of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) gave away the certificates to the 52 successful students completing their Commerce Plus course in 2016-17 in the presence of Nalini Ben Parekh, member of the Governing Committee of the institution. The certificates of the 2^nd Edition of Commerce Plus were distributed in the presence of representatives from the corporate world – those who have already marked their presence in the campus as recruiters as well as those wanting to break in. This was in keeping with the underlying philosophy behind Commerce Plus, as well as a strong endorsement of the course that seeks to liberate the students from the shackles of inward looking curriculum and expose them to real life situations.

Prof Vijay Kothari – the coordinator of the Commerce Plus programme and the placement cell of the College organised the programme on behalf of the college which was also attended by Dr Divyesh Shah and Prof Minakshi Chaturvedi who play pivotal roles in BESC’s Career Connect initiative – short duration quasi-professional courses aimed at empowering students by making them industry ready.

Earlier, Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of BESC explained the reasons underlying the runaway popularity of the Commerce Plus programme highlighting the fact that within just two years of its being the course has succeeded in creating a positive demand-supply mismatch with demand for Commerce Plus graduates outstripping the supply by far. He also explained the courses being introduced from the current session under the umbrella of Career Connect and introduced the domain experts – guest faculties who will conduct and coordinate the respective courses in fields as diverse as Corporate Communications, GST, Ethical Hacking, Stock Market among others. Jaishankar Gopalan, Aswini Bajaj, Abhijit Paul, Chawm Ganguly, Rajiv Soni, Vishal Dave and Mitali Banerjee graced the occasion and presented their take on the Commerce Plus and Career Connect initiatives of the college, both as visiting faculties and as industry end users. The faculty explained the need and efficacy of orienting education with a view towards ensuring that the students, on the completion of these short duration, targeted courses, become deployment ready, lauding the path breaking initiative of the college.

June 3^rd, 2017.The quest for excellence – in everything we do – is an unending one with us in the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). We set ourselves targets, achieve them, only to raise the bar. And nowhere is it more evident than in the core our efforts, in academics. At BESC we not only foster and nurture academic brilliance, providing aspiring achievers with all the wherewithal – be it the most accomplished faculty, cutting edge infrastructural facilities or a state of the art camps that is wired for excellence – but also encourage achievers by acknowledging and honouring their feats.

As a part of this ongoing process of assisting the men and women of letters keep their trysts with academic excellence, the Institution organised a felicitation program where 91 students of the college who had secured more than 90 percent marks in their respective Secondary Board Examinations were honoured with scholarships. All student achievers – from Aayush Mishra to Yogita Munoth had all their college fees exempted by BESC as an acknowledgement of their achievements and as a token of appreciation.

Assembled guests, students and members of the faculty paid their respects by observing two minutes of silence in the memory of the departed soul of Himanshu Budhdeo, member of the executive committee of the college.

The program was then flagged off with a welcome speech by Muskan Kedia while Vikram Guha, a scholarship holder expressed his gratitude on behalf of the students of the college.  The traditional lighting of the lamp of knowledge followed. Present on the occasion were Champaklal Doshi, Chairman of BESC; Miraj Shah, the Vice Chairman; Prof Suman Mukherjee, Director General; Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs; Dr Suchandra Chakravorty, Teacher in Charge and Dr Sandip Dan, the Rector of the college.

Congratulating the young achievers, Dr Suchandra Chakravorty, Teacher in Charge welcomed the assembled guests, dignitaries and students.

Prof Suman Mukherjee talked about the need to foster excellence in all walks of the academic life and urged BESC students to keep the flag of achievement fluttering.

Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs used the opportunity to reach out to the assembled students, talked about the various Career Connect courses that the college has crafted for them and urged them to avail of the courses in their Search for Excellence .

BESC Scholars, it will not be out of place to mention here, have been known to achieve feats that are unparalleled. Excellence in Professional examinations like Chartered, Costing, Company Secretarial, Management and others are routinely cracked and topped, while life beyond – as domain dominating entrepreneurs and super achievers in the corporate world is also their happy hunting ground.

Kolkata June 1^st, 2017. The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) will be starting a 40 hour course on Goods and Services Tax (GST) from the 5^th of June 2017. The course is open to all students of the college as well as to interested traders and businessmen, who will be provided with a certificate on the successful completion of the course. Coming close on the heels of the 1^st July implementation of GST, the course will be a boon of sorts as it will not only lay the maximum amount of stress on the practical aspects of GST, but will also seek to handhold the participants and expose them to the various aspects of the tax , its structures and implications.

The course material has been carefully crafted by a panel of experts drawn from the industry and academic circles who have laid stress on explaining the basic concepts, tenets and working of the new tax regime, with a view towards empowering the students to integrate, as well as help businesses migrate to the new order.

Classes will be held in the morning and conducted by some of the most respected names in the field. The duration of the classes will be about three hours on a daily basis. The course fee has been fixed at INR 2000.

‘As is the practice in BESC, the GST course is set to be off the drawing board and enjoy the prime mover status” said Miraj Shah, the Vice Chairman of BESC. “We expect a huge demand for GST qualified workers in the immediate future – a demand that is only set to rise with the times and it will be our earnest effort to empower our students in this field so that they can be gainfully employed. As a matter of fact, we view this particular 40 hour / 15 day course in GST as the stepping stone into the exciting world, which will lead to specialisations, as we feel that GST in itself will become an unique vertical in our education imparting efforts” said Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the College.

• BESC pits CAT against GMAT to provide a rare insight to students about their respective efficacy

Sujay Kumar Dutta is an IIT alumnus. But that is not his claim to fame. He is also one with more than a decade’s experience as a trainer who has been helping students successfully negotiate the CAT. But that too is not what sets him apart. His real claim to fame – what gives him an almost cult status in the student fraternity – lies in the fact that he has been successfully clearing CAT consecutively for the last five years, that too in the near impossible 99 + percentile.

Mukul Mehta is a B.Tech – an expert in Maths, DI and Quant who has been mentoring students to cross the bar of GMAT and SAT. His fame as the tilting factor, too, precedes him, as was evident by the huge turnout of students – 250 plus by a conservative estimate – at the 6^th floor auditorium of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). That too, during the summer vacation and with the mercury soaring to unbearable highs.

The event was a Seminar: CAT & GMAT that not only sought to debunk widely held myths but also show students ways and means of maxing them out. Naturally, in keeping with the practice of BESC, the most revered names from the respective domains – Sujay Kumar Dutta and Mukul Mehta included – were brought together for the students to interact with, so that all their queries could be addressed by those in the know. Both the speakers made presentations in which they took the audience through the rudiments before taking questions from the floor and comprehensively addressing the concerns of BE-ites.

The seminar was also addressed by Puneet Raman, Founder-Director of Prowisdom Growth, an entity that is actively engaged in expanding the horizons of higher education and empowering students to maximize their potentials. An excellent speaker, he was no stranger to the students of BESC, having mesmerized them with his thoughts and characteristic élan earlier as well.

The event platform was also used by BESC to communicate to the students about Career Connect – six certificate courses that are ready to be unveiled by the Institution for the benefit of the students. Registration Kiosks were set up for CFP, ACCA, Commerce+, Capital Market, Cyber Security and Corporate Communications, which were manned by the respective Course Conductors with whom interested students could not only interact first-hand, but could also register themselves for enrollment. These highly relevant, short term certificate / diploma / professional courses in the fields of finance, skill development and communication have been created by BESC to address the needs of the industry and are aimed at empowering students, as they integrate themselves into productive pursuits. Going by the sheer number of registrations that were filled in on the spot, the efficacy of the Career Connect initiative of BESC in general and that of the courses in particular, was firmly reiterated.

Prof Dilip Shah, Dean of Student Affairs of BESC thanked the speakers for answering the call of BESC to address issues that concern the students and urged the students to utilize the opportunities being provided by the Institution to further hone their search for excellence. He also introduced representatives of all the associate institutions and individuals who are collaborating with BESC to offer the various Career Connect courses, explain their USP’s and spelling out in detail the reasons why students should take them up.

Even as the mercury soars, it is raining trophies in Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) as the college cricket team continues with its winning streak. As a matter of fact, the team that has already emerged triumphant in three tournaments, emerged victorious at the Inter Collegiate T-20 Cricket tournament for men defeating Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College by a huge margin of 69 runs. The highlight of the finals was a sizzling 100 off 57 deliveries by Kazi Zunaid Saifi which was supported by a triple wicket haul for 11 runs by Rajarshi Mitra. The tournament had witnessed the participation of 48 college teams.

The BESC team was led from the front by Abhishek Bose and Coached by Sunil Pandey.

BESC had earlier reached the final by defeating Umesh Chandra College in an evenly balanced game by 22 runs.

Congratulating the team on its success, Miraj Shah, Vice Chairman of BESC stressed on the importance of sports and games in the overall development of students and highlighted the long and glorious record of the college cricketing team. “Cricket”, he said “is acknowledged as the gentleman’s game and I am proud, not only because our students have emerged victorious, but also because each one of you champions, have played like true gentlemen, upholding the spirit of this glorious game.”

The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) has initiated a unique project Jal Se Jeevan, where students of the college with professional plumbers will be visiting neighbourhood residences to offer free services to ensure the stoppage of leaking faucets and taps.

“On an average one in three houses have leaking taps” said Prof Dilip Shah, Dean of Student Affairs, BESC “and these taps lead to a silent wastage, literally drop by drop with an obvious impact on the fragile eco-system, adding to the menace of global warming and climate change. Most people ignore such leaks but the fact remains that cumulatively, they add up to a colossal national waste that can be easily addressed and I am extremely happy that BESC students have initiated the process to address the anomaly”.

Jal Se Jeevan evolved into the present state as an adjunct to the Earth Day celebrations in BESC when, not only did the College impose on itself a one-hour “black out” to spread awareness about the misuse of electricity and thereby lead to a reduction in its carbon footprint; but also vowed to plant 365 saplings around the year to celebrate regeneration. A hundred saplings were distributed to students in the first phase, while a hundred and fifty will be planted by college students in an institution that has been adopted by BESC, where local students will also be co-opted. The rest are being planted and nurtured by the BESC students progressively.

“While the major thrust to the Jal Se Jeevan initiative will be given once the ensuing college examinations are over, the work in the project has already begun. 25 volunteers are already on board, who are visiting local households are collecting data so that once the plumbers are hired, the work can be taken up in right earnest” said Prof Shah. The BESC has set itself a target of covering 1000 households in the initial stages and hopes to set an example that others would want to emulate leading to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals of another kind.

“It is a matter of great pride that such initiatives have been thought up by students of BESC. The College will support their initiative Heart and Soul and hope, like they say, if the mind can conceive it, the heart can believe it, then we certainly can achieve it” said Prof Dilip Shah.

From pre-school to PhD, we have very successfully charted a linear path for our children. We have done what Henry Ford did to automobile making – introducing the production line, where every task is streamlined, every job is specialised and where conformity is the rule, that puts one on the conveyor belt of conventionality. In the process, we can like Henry Ford about his Model-T, proclaim, that one can have it in “any colour you want, as long as it is black”.

The key features of this production line academic system are the strict adherence to the syllabus, where students are cajoled to conform to the never-ending quest for that extra mark; discipline is used to stifle their natural urge to question or experiment; and to blindly follow as gospel truth, the sermons that we deliver. Capacity utilisation, in terms of student roll-out becomes the goal, profitability in terms of revenue generated by the institutions the raison d’etre, and the attaining of an efficiency level where we churn out clones faster than we can imagine, an end in itself. The Model-T is everywhere, ubiquitous in its ugly, uniform black. Oblivious of (or is it obnoxiously ignorant?)  the ground realities, of the demands of the times, or even the desire to cater to the needs of the consumers.

We can pat our collective backs like Henry Ford did with his perceived success of the Model T. Or, we can take a hard look at what has brought us to this precipice. Can past successes guarantee a shelter against future redundancies?  We can continue to load antiquated, anachronistic software (read dated syllabi) on state of the art hardware (read fresh student batches) or do we empower them with the latest operating systems? We can either evolve to tango with the times, or do a Dying Swan. We can either force students to chug along like steam engines on the tracks that we have laid down for them – take them from point A to point B – even as life plays out its grand drama of creation all around the tracks. They can look with amazement at the opportunities sprouting all around them, but restricted as they are to the tracks, can they seize those opportunities? Drink life and success to the lees? Add value to the economy? Contribute to the Nation building process?

There is a growing chasm between us, the academia and our consumers, the industry. We provide them with raw material that is far from being finished or “deployment ready” and must be worked upon, leading to the unpardonable wastage of scarce resources. Tied up as we are to our respective assembly lines, we are unable to incorporate their – the industry’s needs, leave alone give them bespoke solutions. The result, being the creation of a Holy Trinity of lost opportunities. The biggest loser in this entire rigmarole apart from the Industry and the Academia, is, needless to say, the student, whose natural, instinctive creativity is choked; whose talents are blunted; and what could have stood out in proud defiance, is forced to submit to the ordinary. What we are doing is simply put, sacrificing excellence on the altar of mediocrity.

Commerce Plus is our humble effort to break out from this rut, to destroy the moulds of conformity. Our formal journey may have started only two years back, but the background work leading to the journey has been continuing for some time now. The idea is simple – to open the windows and let the fresh air in. To let the young minds equip themselves for the life ahead, as opposed to cramming them with information, all signposts and no destination. To provide students with an opportunity to embrace a culture of inclusive learning: see-feel-learn-earn, where they learn by example and excel from experience.

On a more realistic level, Commerce Plus is also an effort to empower students who are not among the so-called best and the brightest. Efforts are directed towards instilling the required skill sets without confining them to the class rooms, expose them to the experts through interactive sessions and help them acquire skills, hands on, through industry visits so that their transition from the campus to the office is as seamlessly integrated as possible. The fees that are charged for this entire process has been deliberately kept extremely low, subsidised as the dream is, by the management of the institution. A sacrifice for inclusion, contribution of a responsible Corporate Citizen, in an effort to give back to society, a part of what it draws from the society, for sustenance.

On an even higher level, Commerce Plus is an extension of the thought that had led to the setting up of the BESC way back in 1966. The institution was originally conceived with a view towards providing a platform for the dissemination of knowledge, with a marked orientation towards commercial knowledge, irrespective of all socio-economic considerations. To provide supplementary doses of “formal education” to students pursuing careers in business, which explains the morning and evening classes. Even today BESC retains its overwhelmingly Commerce core and from this vantage point, Commerce Plus, is but a logical extension of an idea whose time has come.

Today, it is but significant that while BESC celebrates its 50^th year of being, we are preparing to take our first faltering steps towards the fulfilment of a greater goal, towards the achievement of something that was the integral part of the original charter that our founding fathers had set before themselves, towards a mode of imparting education that is not restricted by or within, itself.

The Commerce Plus, which had begun as an experiment within the hallowed portals of BESC is now in its infancy. And, in keeping with the dream of our founding fathers of making a thousand flowers bloom, we want to open it up for our peers in the domain to review, help us refine it further and if deemed fit, to embrace it for the benefit of our children, the knowledge warriors of tomorrow. The seeds of Commerce plus were planted by BESC, was sustained by a vison, watered by a search for excellence and the tender sprouts guarded with funds from internal resources. Now that it is ready to bear fruits, it is our pleasure and our duty to invite the world to come and share the fruits of our honest efforts – what we have nurtured with our tender loving care.

Th Model T, which had once dared to test the stratosphere and was virtually peerless in its success, was soon consigned to ignominy when it refused to change with the times, refused to pay heed to the needs of those it was supposed to serve. If we do not rise to meet the dynamics of our times, if we fail to future proof ourselves, if we restrict ourselves to the assembly lines of this anachronistic system of rote, then a future that will be worse than the one that befell the Model T, or for that matter the T-Rex, awaits us.

BESC has been synonymous with Commerce for the last five decades. Come join us as we celebrate it, in all its myriad hues and abilities that aid the creation of wealth for the Nations. This Earth Day, we are facing a turning point in human history: 2016 was the warmest year on record globally, and 2015 the warmest year before that. Now 2017 is heating up fast. If we stand by and do nothing, that threat –a future defined by melting glaciers, devastating droughts and a rapid loss of species and habitats – will become an irreversible guarantee .

We know, that together, we can build space, environmental protection and  environmental prosperity and we can solve climate change. We know that we need to make sure future generations will have an Earth as beautiful and diverse as ours to call home.

But before everything else, we can let the world know that we care . Let the world know that we  are  on the right side of the Climate Divide, ready to even walk the Climate Talk – walk the Green Mile. And be the change that we wish to see, to set an example for the others to follow.

We do this on behalf of all leaving things and for those not yet born – on behalf of the 10,000 species per year that will become extinct if we don’t  act and the billions of children who will grow in Climate Poverty during our lifetimes. We do this because everything is at risk: our way of life; our climate; our Oceans, plants and animals.

Kolkata April 19^th, 2017. The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) signed an MOU to offer students an array of professional courses aimed at providing them with the necessary wherewithal to integrate themselves and meet the demands emanating from the industrial establishments. Among the courses that will be immediately offered consequent upon the signing of the MoU will be the comprehensive course offered by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

“This is the first step towards the pursuit of greater global integration of the institution” said Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of BESC “and henceforth, our efforts will be aimed at providing BESC students the best opportunities that will empower them to emerge as globally deployable knowledge warriors, professionals capable of dominating their domains of expertise irrespective of geographical constraints.”

In the near future, BESC has also set on motion moves to launch integrated MCom International Financial Accounting with ACCA and students will be able to secure BSc (H) from the Oxford Brookes University. Willing students will also be awarded MSc degrees by the University of London, pursuant to the submission of relevant Research Papers.

“It will be a win-win situation for the students who will have access to globally recognised qualifications with all the attendant benefits even as they attend the classes from within the confines of their home campus in BESC” said Miraj D. Shah, the Vice Chairman of BESC. “This is also a vindication of sorts for BESC and it is a matter of great happiness that the state of the art campus that we have painstakingly built over the years not to mention the quality of education imparted by our faculty is being acknowledged by educationists and global professional bodies”.

Coming close on the heels of the much acclaimed “Remedial Classes”, where those, who, for whatever reasons, may have missed out the regular lectures were provided with an opportunity to play catch-up before the University exams, Insta-garam promises to be another manna from the heavens, or the college management, or whatever. The idea is to help the winners roll, the toilers take heed and the academically challenged to channel their efforts to maximise their returns on efforts invested. The idea is to help you cross the digital divide, so that we may meet you again, on the other side of graduation, in Linked in, as you make the transition from the campus to the corporate world.
