India and the world are carrying a huge disease burden in the way of Organ failure. This disease is fraught with morbidities for a life time. Patients suffer physically, mentally and of course economically.

One of the most effective methods of therapy is transplantation of the kidney. However, there is a huge crisis of healthy donors. We need to become aware of the immense need for voluntary Organ Donation. Live related donation gives excellent results.

But in the absence of live related donors unethical business is flourishing in the way of unrelated donors who are doing it for money. Under these circumstances the most promising way forward is Cadaveric Transplantation.

Cadaveric Transplantation is when an organ or tissue is transplanted from a deceased or usually unrelated donor. That is possible when a patient is brain dead and the family decides to donate the persons organs or the family of an accident victim donates the organs.

While India has woken up to the possibility of Cadaveric Organ Donation to save lives, West Bengal is also taking steps to ensure that there can be a structured approach.

The Bengal Chamber of Commerce has taken up this challenge to spread awareness and catalyze mechanisms by which this very useful concept can serve its purpose.

On the 26th November, 2016 all right-thinking people, who believe in the virtues of Organ Transplantation, were gathered together to host the programme called the Cadaver Daan.

The inaugural address was given by  Mr. Sutanu Ghosh (President, The Bengal Chamber of commerce and industries).

Lahiri (Chairperson Emeritus,IT Committee,BCCI), Mr. Radhakrishnan (Past president,BCC&I),Mr. Dipak Dutta (Member,BCC&I), Mr. Arun Kr. Special Session on Live Video Conference by Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu , Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India

Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu (Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India) attended the summit through video conference.

“This is the inaugural edition of our annual Summit, and the principal objective is to create an effective platform in the Eastern region of India for all infrastructure stakeholders to discuss, analyze, share best practices and bring forward the opportunities in infrastructure and related logistics sectors, especially the cutting-edge developments of today. Today, we would like to stress upon infrastructure-related business development discussions, that brings the Government together with private Infrastructure players, corporates and consultants”, said, Mr. Sutanu Ghosh, President, BCC&I. He also added, “As many States are already stressed about their Fund, the cash flow becomes the crucial problem for building infrastructure. Acquiring land is a problem, implementation such as removal of people is again a problem but indeed a great amount of work has already been done. There is a serious demand for private sector investment and that is seriously lacking as the level of private investment is far below the growing need.”

Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu (Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India) said, “Within a few years, the future of the Railway Stations in India will be much better than the infrastructure and all other facilities available at the airports. The Surat Railway Station model can be stated as an example. We have planned to develop 400 such railway stations all-over India, keeping in mind the local culture of different parts of India. The the stations will have Railway City Bus Services and other mode of transports, which is a joint-venture with the state governments. We are now shifting to 100% e-tendering and PayPal process. All of these are under the umbrella of ‘Make In India’ project and we are also planning to sell the manufactured products and equipments used for building railway tracks, to other countries once we are ready.”

dsc_7802

Despite efforts taken by the government, investment momentum is yet to pick up and as a result, order inflows are devoid of large investments. There is still capacity under-utilisation and, therefore, no investments are coming in capacity addition. Players are waiting for demand momentum to go up. In this scenario it is interesting to understand what would be the view of the prime stakeholders and how cost efficiency and technology would be key instruments to tackle this problem.

Shri Rohit K Singh (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Govt. of India) said, “There are various business models like PPP, BOT, etc. But the Govt. of India is now following the Asset Recycling Model, wherein, we have assigned 75 projects to different private companies for a lease of 30 years against an advanced sum of money. These private organisations are now taking care of the development of the roads and highways that has been allocated to them. And it is very useful since it has given a profit of Rs. 50,000 crore to the government.”

The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) is pleased to announce the opening of their new office in Siliguri, which is expected to help the Chamber work more closely with the many industrial/trade associations in the region, paving the way for more dynamic growth of trade and commerce in North Bengal. As India’s oldest Chamber, BCC&I carries out multiple roles as catalyst, initiator, facilitator, business partner and service provider, and has helped governments, both at the Centre and State, in crafting and pioneering significant legislations.

As the gateway to North Bengal. Siliguri is now being considered as an economic centre in itself, which is showing a quick growth rate. Thanks to Siliguri, North Bengal has become a hub for trade and commerce, with countries like Nepal and Bangladesh using the corridor through Siliguri to help in transporting rice and other commodities. Siliguri’s trade businesses include timber, tea, transport and tourism. The city has also become a prominent and preferred destination for investments, thanks to its rapid growth.

“The new Siliguri office of the Bengal Chamber will help to establish Siliguri as a gateway for trade, commerce and industry in eastern and north-eastern India, as well as help business and industrial establishments in Siliguri make deeper inroads into mainstream industrial activity,” said Mr. Ambarish Dasgupta, president, BCC&I. “We hope that in this way, the Chamber will be able to contribute more efficiently to the economic activities of the region as well as the nation, retaining our focus and roots in the eastern region.”

The Siliguri office is being inaugurated with a Panel Discussion on “Industrial Resurgence of West Bengal – Role of North Bengal”. The panelists for the discussion include: Mr. KK Mittal (CMD, PCM Group, Siliguri).
