India, July 04, 2018 – Atos, an international leader in digital transformation, and the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission)’s direction of defense applications (CEA/DAM) place Tera 1000 – a supercomputer they developed together for defense and nuclear deterrence uses – among the world’s 500 most powerful machines. Reaching the 14th position, Tera 1000 thus becomes the most powerful European general-purpose supercomputer, with a computing power of 25 petaflops and a very competitive power consumption of 4 MegaWatts.

This result crowns the expertise acquired by the CEA/DAM and Atos in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and the co-design strategy initiated some 18 years ago by the two partners, working together as top contenders in the international competition towards exascale capacities – reaching a billion billion calculations per second.

Developing an exaflop-class supercomputer by 2020 is a necessity for some of the defense programs implemented by the CEA/DAM. To reach this capacity, technological breakthroughs are needed – most notably  to maintain low levels of energy consumption, one of the key challenges in the high-performance computing market, but also to ensure smooth information flows and process the significant volumes of data produced by increasingly precise simulations of multi-physical, multi-dimensional phenomena.

To do so, the CEA/DAM decided to adopt co-design processes developed by Atos, with the help of Intel. The objective is to maximize the performances of the supercomputer by testing it on applications. The CEA/DAM’s competencies are required at several levels: for the structure of the applications’ computing codes, the interaction between these codes and the supercomputer and for the architecture of the supercomputer itself.

25 times more powerful for the same electricity consumption, an outstanding eco-responsible achievement

Deployed in two stages at the CEA center in Bruyères-le-Châtel (Île-de-France), Tera 1000 has a 25-petaflop computing capacity and best-in-class energy efficiency for a large range of applications – an achievement made possible through the use of technologies developed by Atos for its line of BullSequana X supercomputers. BullSequana uses an innovative cooling technology, using streams of lukewarm water circulating in close proximity to processors. A single BullSequana module can deliver almost three quarters of the computing power of the Tera 100, the supercomputer that was formerly in use at the CEA/DAM, with an energy efficiency improved by a factor of 25.

François Geleznikoff, the director of defence applications at the CEA, says: “Once again, the partnership between Atos and the CEA/DAM has allowed a major technological milestone in the power capacities of supercomputers. With the Tera 1000, we have very significantly increased the quality that digital simulations can attain for defence applications, but also for research and industry uses. This step opens the way to the exaflops in the coming decade.

Pierre Barnabé, Chief Operating Officer of Atos’ Global Big Data & Security Division, adds: “Atos is very proud to help France and Europe gain international prominence in supercomputers, and to provide the CEA with the computing power they need to develop quality innovative research. This spot in the top-500 ranking reflects the successful collaboration between Atos and the CEA, and is one of the best examples of Atos’ technological excellence in high-performance computing.

The full ranking can be found at https://www.top500.org/

Technical features

Tera 1000 consists of two computing partitions:

  • The first one, relying on Intel® Xeon V3 processors, has been in production since 2016
  • The second one uses latest-generation BullSequana, based on Intel® Xeon Phi™ Knight Landing processors connected with a very-high-performance Bull X Interconnect(BXI) network, a result of the R&D collaboration between the CEA/DAM and Atos

The second layer of Tera 1000 marks a breakthrough in the parallel setups used for its 540,000 computing cores. Its architecture prefigures those that will be used in the next CEA/DAM computer, EXA1, by 2020.

India, May 29 2018 – Atos and the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) just launched an industrial research chair , co-funded by the National Research Agency (ANR), to develop research and innovation in quantum computing.

Led by Daniel Estève, the industrial research chair, named “Nasniq” (New nuclear spin architecture for quantum computing), aims to contribute to the development of the quantum computer, which can revolutionize how information is processed in the years ahead and can manage the explosion of data driven by Big Data and the Internet of Things. Quantum technologies represent a key factor for sovereignty which now requires a major effort in terms of research and development, bringing together academic teams and businesses.

To address this, Atos and the CEA-CNRS, with the support of the National Research Agency (ANR), will work in synergy and will contribute their expertise to this initiative.

Atos, a global player in supercomputing and European leader, will bring its expertise in high-performance computing and quantum computing to the industrial research chair. Indeed in 2016 Atos launched “Atos Quantum”, an ambitious quantum computing program that has already enabled it to bring to market, as of July 2017, the “Atos Quantum Learning Machine” (Atos QLM), the world’s first machine capable of simulating up to 40 quantum bits and which now simulates physical Qubits for increased performance.

Daniel Estève and the “Quantronic “group, from the Condensed State Physics Department (Spec, CEA-CNRS, Paris-Saclay), are pioneers in the knowledge and control of quantum information. This group founded the so-called Cooper pair box circuit that has led to superconducting quantum bits which are used today.

The Nasniq research chair will combine the essential research efforts carried out by the Spec team (CEA-CNRS) with Atos’ developments in algorithmic simulation, further reinforcing the synergies between all the activities of the CEA in this field. In addition, the chair will allow to monitor technological developments in the appropriation of this innovative field.

“This research chair marks an important milestone in the emergence of a French quantum computing industry. In a context in which quantum technologies are becoming a real global issue, it allows us to position Atos and the CEA, two leading French actors, as European leaders in quantum computing. Together we are involved in making France a major research center in quantum computing in the world”said Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO, Atos.

“International competition has accelerated dramatically in recent months in the field of quantum computing. The Nasniq chair is the opportunity for the CEA and Atos to extend their already existing partnership in the field of high performance computing in quantum computing. It will also allow us to position our teams more favourably in future European calls on quantum engineering, within the framework of the European Commission’s flagship Quantum Technologies or the 9th Framework Programme”, said François Jacq, General Manager of the CEA.

A Basic and Applied R&D program

The Nasniq chair must address several challenges:

  • Design and test new types of qubits and better control quantum coherence: Spec teams are working to control quantum coherence by developing more robust quantum bits;
  • Quantum software for hybrid qubits: Atos will provide its expertise in quantum software and algorithms, as well as in numerical simulation, for the development of new software relevant for qubits carried by a nuclear spin;

By strengthening the interaction between research teams and industrial teams, the Nasniq chair will also be able to train future engineers and researchers in the field.

Paris, April 19, 2018 – Atos, a leader in digital transformation, today announces that it has been identified as a ‘Leader’ by global research and advisory firm NelsonHall in its latest Vendor Evaluation & Assessment Tool (NEAT) for Big Data & Analytics Services.

According to the report, Atos has a comprehensive offering (including consulting and system integration services, platforms, reference architectures, and a well-developed set of industry solutions). The report cites Atos’ strengths, including scale, CEO-sponsored strategic initiatives across all Atos’ units, and  a high level of investment in its portfolio of offerings and IP.

The NelsonHall NEAT vendor evaluation study assesses 12 of the most significant service providers that deliver Big Data & Analytics services against their ‘ability to deliver immediate benefit’ and their ‘ability to meet future requirements’. Atos was positioned as a Leader in both capacities for three categories: Operational Improvement Focus, New Business Model Focus and Overall.

Commenting on the research, Dominique Raviart, IT Services Practice Director at NelsonHall, said: “Within IT services, the share of spending related to mature offerings will decrease which means vendors are now challenged to grow expertise in high growth offerings such as big data and analytics. With Atos Codex, Atos has invested in new technologies, addresses challenges such as fragmentation of software tools, and has created a large number of industry use cases. Atos is also investing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to bring further automation in analytics, and NelsonHall views this investment as very positive.”

Elaborating on Atos’ role as a leader in Big Data & AnalyticsSean Narayanan, Executive Vice President for Business Platforms & Solutions at Atos said: “We are proud to be recognized as a global Leader in Big Data & Analytics Services by NelsonHall. National March 28, 2018 – Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, and Siemens, a global engineering leader, today announce the reinforcement of their strategic co-operation, with plans to accelerate their joint business until 2020 through an ambitious joint go-to-market plan and the strengthening of their joint innovation and investment program. The program has been increased by €100 million, totaling €330 million – more than three times the original sum. As part of this partnership, Siemens contributed its IT solutions and services business to Atos in exchange for around 12.5 million Atos shares. The deal created a new European IT champion for systems integration, application management, cloud computing, with IT solutions for industry software, mobility, building technologies, smart power grids and other IT services.

National, February 9, 2018 : Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, has been selected by ESA, the European Space Agency, to deliver and operate Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS). The DIAS will combine real-time geo data from Copernicus, the world’s largest single Earth Observation program, with data from multiple sources and turn it into information products for companies in sectors such as manufacturing, insurance, utilities, agriculture, forestry, urbanism and emergency services.

For example, it can help:

  • Scientists understand the impact of climate change,
  • Governments and cities better manage and anticipate urban development,
  • Oil and gas companies evaluate and manage risk,
  • Farmers better manage their crops and yield.

Open platform for innovation

On behalf of the European Commission and the European Space Agency, Atos will lead a newly-created consortium, composed of DLR, e-Geos, EOX, GAF, Sinergise, Spacemetric, Thales Alenia Space and T-Systems.

Atos will be responsible for integrating, delivering and operating the Cloud platform which will integrate specialized data sources. This new platform will make the data from the European Union constellation of Sentinel satellites and from data providers, more accessible. This will make it possible for third parties (industrial players, institutions such as national space agencies, SMEs and start-ups) to build innovative business services based on satellite data. Atos, with its partners, will build and commercialize the new services.

Atos’ technology and expertise combined with those of its partners will bring speed, flexibility and robustness to the platform which is capable of handling vast amounts of data in different formats.

The Atos Codex portfolio of data services will provide DIAS with analytics and cognitive capabilities to turn raw satellite data into valuable insights for several industries.

Key value for society

Providing new services that integrate accurate and real-time information from satellites offers the following major advantages:

  • Greater understanding of how our planet functions– key earth observation and remote sensing data is increasingly valuable to understand the functioning of our planet and ecosystems.
  • Faster prediction– combining and processing large volumes of complex data from multiple sources can produce unique insights in near real-time.
  • Improved decision-making– organizations can now easily integrate earth observation data into their business value chains providing insights that have not previously been within reach.

Stéphane Janichewski, Head of Defence & Aerospace Market at Atos concludes:

We have spent several years investing in this offering in order to help scientific organizations, public organizations and enterprises of all sizes benefit from combining large volumes of Earth Observation data with third party data sources. We see immense opportunities to address some of society’s greatest challenges such as wildlife protection, climate change or resource scarcity.”

According to the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC), which brings together professionals in the sector, the market for services based on Earth observation data is expected to grow by 10% to 15%[1] over the next few years, with multiplication of innovative services in many areas.

The platform will be available to customers worldwide in June 2018.
