Amritsar, August 6, 2015: The first batch of Post Graduate Programme (PGP) of Indian Institute of Management Amritsar, one of the six new IIMs that the Narendra Modi government proposed in the budget session 2014-15 earlier this year was inaugurated by the Minister for Higher Education & Languages of Punjab, Sardar Surjit Singh Rakhra today, in the presence of Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni, director, IIM Kozhikode and mentor director IIM Amritsar, Deans, Faculties and Senior Administrative staff of IIM Kozhikode.

It is Punjab’s first IIM and is being mentored by IIM Kozhikode.

The first batch of about 65 students will start classes this week from a temporary campus at the Punjab Institute of Technology, Amritsar.

While addressing the first batch of students, parents and invited dignitaries and guests and IIM community, Sardar Surjit Singh Rakhra, Minister of Higher Education and Languages, Government of Punjab, shared his enthusiasm for Punjab’s first premier management institute, said, “I’m happy to  announce that out of the 6 new IIMs announced in India recently, IIM Amritsar becomes the second to be inaugurated. Punjab can become one of the leading states in education through IIM Amritsar. We must institutionalize IIMs and produce the best of human resources.

Speaking during the inauguration, he appealed to the students, “Today the students of IITs and IIMs have excelled in various fields. IIMs play an important role to change the image of India.  We also need to provide quality education to the poor, if we are to become a global superpower. I know most of you would be looking forward to a career in the banking or the financial sector, but you must also look at agriculture and rural management.

IIM Amritsar was given a final go ahead for the course this year upon the finalization of the permanent site for the IIM campus by a committee in late June. IIM Kozhikode, the mentor institute has with its vast experience, has put together the programme structure, systems and faculty within a month making it possible for the program to begin.

Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni, director, IIM Kozhikode, said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Human Resource Development in initiating the process of starting IIM Amritsar in October last year. The Commitment of Government of Punjab in setting up IIM Amritsar is admirable that sends a signal to other States who are vying for academic institutions of repute.”

He further added, “Students are the brick and mortar in building an institute. It is the students who largely shape the academic culture and dignity of the institutions.”

IIM Amritsar hopes to move into their own campus of about 60 acres near Manawala on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road in the next 2-3 years.

About Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode

  • PHD CHAMBER TO HOST “SAARC BUYER-SELLER MEET” IN PITEX, 2015 IN DECEMBER

Amritsar, 25 May, 2015

The Pakistan Show came to its logical culmination with the coming together of people from the two nations exchanging love and affection with each other.

“The aim of forging better people to people relations, culminating into B2B trade relations between the two nations through these expos seems fulfilled satisfactorily”, said Dalip Sharma, Director, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, adding, “You can see the nationals of both the countries mingling together with each other, sharing the common rich cultural heritage, language, besides dressing, with the huge rush of visitors thronging the Pakistani Stalls and buying products.”

Sharing that more than 70,000 visitors visited the show over the 5 days, Sharma expressed satisfaction over the overall response to the show.

Responding to the call of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to organize such events in Pakistan as well, where the people from India could visit Pakistan, and a people to people connect could be established on their side as well, Sharma informed, “We have decided that PHD Chamber will hold an “India Show” exhibition in Islamabad in February, 2016 to further strengthen the INDO-PAK trade ties. 100-150 exhibitors will be participating in the show.” The program will be supported by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, he added.

This would not only boost trade and commerce but also make the people on Pak side more and more receptive to their Indian counterparts and create an environment conducive for further acceptance of each other.

Sharma further informed, “Concurrent to the annual event of PHD Chamber, Punjab International Trade Expo, PITEX, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in association with Ministry of Commerce, Government of India shall organize“SAARC Buyer and Seller Meet” in December, 2015. 100 foreign exhibitors are expected to participate therein.”

The exhibitors and officials from Pakistan were optimistic that the governments, both in India, and Pakistan would be able to plan and organise things for better bilateral trade environment on both sides.

The exhibitions seemed visibly very happy with the response to their products.  Khurshid Barlas, Chairman, Regional Trade Committee and executive Member, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry shared that next time, there shall be more additions to the products and variety.

Barlas added that credit goes to such exhibitions and expos as these, which go a long way in confidence building. Bilateral trade is perhaps the only such thing which can pave way to peaceful and harmonious co-existence of the allies.

The 5-day event, said the visiting Pakistani traders, is like a bridge between the two Punjabs.  “During our stay here, we failed to realise even once that we are in India.  The culture, food, language, and even accent is so similar that not even once we felt out of place”, said Shahnaaz from Lahore.

Tasleem Ahmed Warsi and Mohammed Khilji from Warsi Food Karachi, putting up the Pak food court in the exhibitions said the love being showered on us is simply amazing.  Inviting the Indian to visit Pakistan, Ahmed said, “It would be wonderful, if people from India also visit Pakistan and see themselves how Pakistanis long to visit India.”

The designer lehangas, anarkali suits, gems, jewellery, and juttis are the other big hit with the visitors, specially the youngsters.  The polka, kundan, and oxidized jewellery sold like hot cakes.

It being the last day, people thronged the Trillium Mall since early morning. Sharma appreciated and thanked the masses at Amritsar for making the 5-day expo so successful.

“The potential gains from the increased bilateral co-operation between Indian and Pakistan are immense.  Relaxed issuing of visas, rupee trade and lesser complications in customs procedures may well enhance the scope for trade”, said Sharma.

The two sides have been making efforts to strengthen the economic relations between the two countries.  Remarking that better relations are a win-win situation for both traders and governments, Sharma said “As it is, informal trade between Indian and Pakistan via third countries like the United Arab Emirates (mainly Dubai), Singapore and Hong Kong is estimated at $10 billion.  Moreover, the legalized trade would reduce costs and increase government revenue.”

India and developed high competitiveness in services sector.  Other areas with potential for cooperation in the near future could be petroleum products, iron and steel, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automobiles, heavy industries, electricity trade, small and medium enterprises, IT and IT enabled services, telecommunications, transportation and financial services, he added.

Minister Trade, Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, Muhammad Irfan Tarar and Industry and Commerce Minister, Punjab, Madan Mohan Mittal formally inaugurated the Show.

Both the ministers appreciated the quality of exhibits. Calling upon the masses to visit and experience this exhibition, Mittal said, it is a unique endeavor of both the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, adding that only such efforts as this go a long way in promoting not only business to business but people to people connect also.

“Pak Show brings the two Punjabs together. These shows happening over a number of years are testimony to the fact that the business communities on both the sides of the border are keen and eager to see peace ushering in on both the countries”, said Tarar after the inauguration of the 5- day expo and cultural extravaganza.

Minister Trade Tarar said, “The interest of both the countries for boosting and enhancing not only bilateral trade but the people to people connect as well is immense, adding that the governments on both sides are committed to boost bilateral trade so that peaceful development can be realised on both sides of the border sooner than later”.

“Such events go a long way in removing the coloured inhibitions among the masses in general and the business community in particular. Such events need to be held more frequently, said R S Sachdeva, Co-Chairman, Punjab Committee, PHD Chamber.

“The response to the earlier expos has been tremendous, which encourages us to visit and exhibit in India year over year”, echoed exhibitors from Pakistan.

Test Date – 8th February 2015 (Sunday)

No Registration Fee

For meritorious students studying in Class VIII (going to IX) & Class X (going to XI); whose total parental income is below Rs. 10,000/- per month

Delhi, 8 Jan, 2015: FIITJEE, the country’s premier institute for IIT-JEE training, will conduct a nation-wide examination on February 8 to select 40 underprivileged but highly meritorious students who will be groomed and tutored for free by the institution for entrance to India’s most reputed engineering colleges.

The “FORTUNATE 40” examination will be held across designated test centres in India for all students studying in class VIII and X, who aspire to make it to IIT-JEE in the year 2019 & 2017 respectively, but do not have the financial resources to afford an effective coaching institution.

The selected 40, who show potential for doing well in the field, will be taken under the wing of FIITJEE, an organization which sends a large number of students to IITs and other prestigious engineering colleges of India every year.

While students from a cross section of society aspire to make it to the IITs, it is not an easy exercise. Having the intellectual capability and potential is not enough as cracking JEE also requires a rigorous training and guidance. Students from economically less fortunate backgrounds often fail to avail the benefits of such coaching programmes.

Keeping in mind the aspirations of such students, FIITJEE being a social responsibility-conscious organization, designed the FORTUNATE 40 programme in 2008. It’s a program exclusively created to provide world-class training to serious students from financially weaker backgrounds and enthuse them to achieve their goal of success & top ranks in IIT-JEE and other competitive exams.

This program will select and financially support those capable students presently studying in class VIII (going to IX) & class X (going to XI) whose total parental income is below Rs.10, 000/- per month. FIITJEE will support these meritorious students in their preparation for achieving their dream goals by awarding 100% scholarships for FIITJEE programs & 100% waivers on hostel charges.

“Talent and potential is not exclusive to the elite sections of the society. Every child with potential should be given a level playing field in competition. IITs are India’s foremost intellectual institutions and the best talents from this cross section of society also deserve their due place in them. Our FORTUNATE 40 programme is designed to propel into the big league 40 such students who might get lost in absence of essential guidance and training. Over the past few years, many of these students nurtured by us have created new benchmarks of success and have made us immensely proud,” says Mr. R L Trikha, Director, FIITJEE.

The selection test will be conducted at the centres in Delhi (South Delhi, Punjabi Bagh, Dwarka & East Delhi), Delhi NCR (Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon & Noida), Amritsar, Anantapur, Bangalore, Bhilai, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bokaro, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dhanbad, Durgapur, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kalpakkamm, Kanpur, Karimnagar, Khammam, Kolkata, Kurnool, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Netarhat, Patna, Pune, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Shaktinagar NTPC, Trichy, Vadodara, Varanasi & Visakhapatnam.

The last date to apply for test is 1st February 2015 (Sunday) and there will be no registration fee for this selection test. To be eligible for the FORTUNATE 40 batch, students have to clear the individual subject cut-offs & also the grand total cut-off.

Amritsar, 6 December, 2014

Stressing on a renewed thrust on the development of MSMEs, Vinay Mahajan, Regional Manager, State Bank of India said, “State governments, banks, industry and all other stakeholders need to come forward and supplement each other for the growth of MSMEs.”

Mahajan was speaking during the industry roundtable on “Addressing the Financing Issues of SMEs” organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the third day of PHD- Punjab International Trade Expo, PHD-PITEX, 2014 at Ranjit Avenue, here today.

The roundtable was organized to discuss the problems faced by Small and Medium Enterprises of the region in arranging finance.

“To make the ‘Make in India’ drive of the present government successful” Piara Lal Seth, President, Shawl Club Amritsar said, “the financial investment, infrastructure and working culture should be of international level to compete in the international market.”

To make this happen, said Seth, the fund flow should be such which pushes the growth of industry to the next level. Rates of Interest for industry should be competitive to enable the industrial units to invest further and upgrade their plant and machinery.

Highlighting that Indian industries face impediments like technological obsolescence, relatively poor product quality, insufficient information, poor market linkages, inadequate management systems, power shortage and a host of other problems besides pressures from the international markets, Dalip Sharma, Director, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that financing schemes should be such which facilitate growth of industry. “There should be marketing- loaning linkages to make the financial arrangements successful”, he added.

In the Indian scenario where infrastructure and provision of finance is still largely provided and regulated through the government or its institutions, the involvement of such institutions will not only be necessary but also has to be innovative to cater to the specific needs, said Mr Sharma.

The delegates from Pakistan who were present on the occasion stressed on the need for having Pakistan Bank branches in India and vice versa to facilitate easy transactions by trade and industry.

Amit Sethi, DGM, who represented Small Industries Development Bank of India, SIDBI shared the bank’s initiatives for various clusters in the State besides sharing the bank’s SME specific policies.

Shalender Girdhar, Deputy Vice President, Cluster Head, Amritsar, AXIS Bank also joined deliberations and shared Axis Bank’s arrangements with foreign banks for facilitating both Indian and Pak traders.

govt of india1. In order to give a boost to industrial development in the densely populated states of Northern India, the Prime Minister has approved the commencement of preparatory work on creating an Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor.

2. The Amritsar – Kolkata Industrial Corridor is patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). The DMIC uses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone and is one of the most significant developments taking place in the sphere of industrialization. The DMIC has financial support from the Japanese Government and is expected to attract large investments leading to rapid industrial growth in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra through the development of new cities, industrial zones, and world-class infrastructure.

3. In a similar manner, the Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor will use the Eastern dedicated Freight Corridor as the backbone. The Eastern DFC extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata. Therefore, the Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor will be structured around the Eastern DFC and also the Highway system that exists on this route. It will also leverage the Inland Waterway System being developed along National Waterway – 1 which extends from Allahabad to Haldia.

4. The Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor will cover the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40% of India`s population. This is a region which needs a major push for industrialization and job-creation and the Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor will act as a catalyst for this growth. The corridor will cover the cities of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Saharanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur and Kolkata.

5. In order to do the preparatory work for setting up an Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor, the Prime Minister has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Group consisting of the following:

(i) Secretary, DIPP Chairman
(ii) Secretary, DEA Member
(iii) Chairman, Railway Board Member
(iv) Secretary, Urban Development Member
(v) Secretary, RTH Member
(vi) Secretary, Shipping/Chairman, IWAI Member

6. This Inter Ministerial Group will examine the feasibility of setting up the Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor along with the structural and financing arrangements that would be required to operationalise it at the earliest. The IMG will give its report within a month.
