SMA Announces Recipient for James F. Collins Advocacy Award

Washington, D.C. – The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) presented one of its most prestigious steel industry awards: the James F. Collins Achievement in Advocacy Award to John Bass, Nucor Corporation. Bass was presented with this award during the joint SMA & AISI Annual Members Conference at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.

The James F. Collins Excellence in Advocacy Award is named in honor of SMA founder, James F. Collins, for his leadership and integral role in the growth of the domestic EAF industry. This award was established to recognize an individual or team that has made a significant contribution to advocating public policy changes that serve the domestic steel industry.  Past recipients include: James F. Collins (SMA), Eileen Bradner (Nucor), Doug Polk (Vallourec USA) and Tracy Porter (Commercial Metals Company).

Tracy Porter, Executive Vice President of Operations & COO of Commercial Metals Company and Chairman of the SMA commented that Bass “is a tireless champion and advocate for the Steel Industry who is driven by the notion that we’re stronger as an industry when united.”

SMA President, Philip K. Bell added, “John’s work on steel industry matters involving government trade policy and compliance with United States and international trade laws demonstrates the knowledge, passion, and commitment needed to influence public policy decisions at the highest levels.  His unique ability to encourage engagement and build coalitions make him a deserving recipient of this SMA honor.”

SMA is North America’s largest steel trade association, and the primary association for electric arc furnace steel producers.  SMA’s member companies account for over seventy-five percent of domestic steelmaking capacity.
