The April event is part of the official Order of Merit to send 36 qualifiers into a Grand Final in January 2017. The Emirates Golf Club qualifiers will also be joined by another 36 qualifiers from the monthly medal series at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.

At each of the Monthly Medal events there will be a Porsche Centre Dubai nearest-the-pin competition, and Joe Smith became the first winner at the weekend on the par 3 7th hole.

He will be joined by seven more qualifiers and eight other invited golfers who will form two teams led by celebrities to contest the season-ending par-3 style shootout across the lake that guards the 18th green on the Majlis course.

The big extra incentive for the eight qualifiers will be the chance to win the fabulous hole-in-one prize of a Porsche Cayenne, the official car for the OMA Emirates Medal Championship in association with Porsche Centre Dubai.

The giant green shared with the ninth hole has been the setting for many memorable finishes to the Desert Classic over the last 27 years. These included a sudden-death play-off win for Seve Ballesteros in 1992, and Colin Montgomerie’s brilliant driver from the fairway to set up victory in 1996 which was named the shot of the year on the PGA European Tour.

The backing of the OMA Emirates Medal Championship by Porsche Centre Dubai, Al Nabooda Automobiles is the result of its extended relationship with Emirates Golf Club following a successful 2015 golf programme.

“We have enjoyed a very successful two-year association with the club, and wanted to create some new excitement for members, the wider golfing community, and our customers who are passionate about the game,” said Vijay Rao, General Manager of Porsche Centre Dubai, Al Nabooda Automobiles, the sole distributor for Porsche in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

“The new end-of-season shoot-out will be a great way to round off the season, and we’re looking to include two celebrities from the world of sport and entertainment into the format.”
