BESC students fight it out in the Turf, prepare for greater glories.

Its tournament season in Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). Students are donning their sports gear to sweat it out to the podium with supporters cheering respective teams as they escape to victory. As part of this enfolding adrenalin rush, the BESC Intra-College Badminton tournament was flagged off on March 3rd, 2017.

30 girls and 50 boys are participating in the Tournament. Fixtures have been drawn and the girl’s elimination rounds have already been played. The Girl’s Final will be held on the 8th of March, to commemorate the International Women’s Day. The Boy’s final will be played on the next day. Both the final matches will be flood-lit.

The badminton tournament is being organised close on the heels of the hugely successful Bhawanipur Premier League Tournament (BPLT) where 540 students spread over 90 teams of 6 players each wielded the willow in a knock-out format where rules of indoor cricket applied. The Tournament, which was ceremoniously started by College Vice Chairman Miraj D. Shah – he literally stepped out and drove the first ball bowled by Dean of Student Affairs Prof Dilp Shah to the fence – was a huge hit even in terms of spectator involvement.

Such high was the competitive quality of the tournament that none of the teams that featured students who represent the state in larger formats of the game made it to the finals which was played on the 22nd of February, 2017 in the presence of dignitaries that included Champak Lal Doshi, President- BESC,  Sandip Dan, Rector and Prof Dilip Shah, Dean of Student Affairs. After a thrilling contest where no runs were conceded without a fight, Team Y, captained by Nawaz Jahangir became the Champions, followed by Team HH (Captain -Md. Shamshad) as the runners up and Team I1 of Utkarsh Singh taking up the 3rd Place.

After the Virat Kohlis and the P.V. Sindhu’s, BESC students are now readying to don the mantle of Magic Johnson and Cristiano Ronaldo as Basketball and Football Tournaments are also being worked out. Such tournaments are encouraged by the College to ensure more and more participation of students in sporting activities with a view towards their overall mental and physical well-being. The Astro-turf arena, fondly christened “The Turf”, is open for such tournaments till July, when a Shamiana is erected to accommodate the various socio-cultural events organised by the BESC students till November – with the “Turf” morphing into the “Pavilion”. Either way, it has emerged into one of the college hotspots, where students congregate and showcase their talents around the year.

Apart from the obvious health and other positive attributes associated with competitive sports, such tournaments are also actively encouraged by BESC as they provide students with real-life experience of organising events on their own, with student teams looking after all the related aspects and learning even as the balls are hit and shuttle corks smashed.
